Sinclair Community College company history timeline

1850

It all started with the man who bears the name of the college, David Ainslie Sinclair, born in 1850, a Scottish immigrant who spent his early years in Canada.

1887

1.) Scottish immigrant and secretary of the Dayton YMCA, David Sinclair, founded an adult training school that offered Bookkeeping and Mechanical Drawing in 1887.

A new building was commissioned and opened in 1887 at Fourth and Main Street.

1891

55 students attended these courses, and the first diploma was awarded in 1891.

1908

He never saw the completion of his dream, as the new building opened in 1908.

1948

Locations changed as the school grew at 117 W. Monument Avenue in Dayton, and changed its name to Sinclair College of the YMCA in 1948.

1965

Then in 1965, the YMCA relationship was dropped and Sinclair Community College became the official public community college of Montgomery County.

1966

4.) A site for the newly-formed Sinclair Community College was selected and a one-mill, ten-year levy was approved in 1966 for construction of a new campus.

1972

5.) In 1972, the new 20-acre campus was opened at 444 West Third Street.

Over 110 years after David A. Sinclair’s death, the campus has grown exponentially, moving to its current location at 5th Street in 1972 and hosting 23,000 students enrolled in hundreds of different programs, many focusing on technologies not even dreamed up during Sinclair’s time.

1977

Founded in 1977, the Clarion is the student newspaper for Sinclair Community College.

2006

With an enrollment of approximately twenty-four thousand students in 2006, Sinclair Community College has become one of the largest community colleges in the United States.

Until 2006, the main campus in downtown Dayton was the college’s only learning area, aside from some classes held in area high schools, YMCAs, and other facilities.

2009

Classes began at the Preble County Learning Facility, located next to the YMCA in Eaton, on September 9, 2009.

Sinclair had an enrollment of 25,345 students in 2009, making the main campus one of the largest (by enrollment) community college campuses in North America.

2013

In March 2013 the college settled a First Amendment lawsuit by revising a speech code that prohibited students and visitors from holding signs on campus.

According to the Dayton Daily News, in 2013 Sinclair purchased a 3.4 acre addition to the Courseview Campus Center in Mason with the intent of eventually serving 10,000 students there.

2016

Also that year, the college opened a second Mason facility, "Building B." In August 2016, Sinclair Community College and the University of Cincinnati signed a partnership allowing Sinclair students attending the Mason campus to pursue a bachelor's degree in Information Technology at UC.
