  • Paid Summer Intern

    Aza 4.1company rating

Entry level job in Sitka, AK

Fortress of the Bear Paid Summer Intern Fortress of the Bear, located in Southeast Alaska, is a non-profit bear sanctuary. Due to a lack of rehab and release program for orphaned bears in Alaska, cubs are routinely destroyed if appropriate captive homes in zoos or sanctuaries cannot be found. Fortress of the Bear is dedicated to the rescue and lifelong care of orphaned bear cubs. The facility is currently home to eight rescued bears - five brown and three black. We are seeking four experienced, enthusiastic individuals to support our team for the impending summer season! This is a temporary internship position that will last approximately 22 weeks (May - September). Candidates that cannot commit to this entire time period need not apply. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. While experience working with bears is not required, it is also preferred. This is a paid internship position. Interns will be paid AK minimum wage ($13.00ph) and will be expected to work 40 hours per week. Interns will also receive shared housing (including rent, utilities & wifi), a shared work vehicle and uniform items. Fortress of the Bear will also offer up to $800 flight reimbursement per intern. Under direct supervision initially, interns are expected to show initiative and perform a wide range of tasks, including all aspects of bear husbandry, giving educational presentations to the public, general maintenance and retail assistance. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: * Provide quality interpretive talks to our visitors - typically crowds of 50-100 people, multiple times per day. An ability to speak publicly is a must! Candidates that are not comfortable giving public presentations to large crowds need not apply. * Preparing daily diets for the bears, including collection of food goods from offsite suppliers. * Record daily animal behavior, nutrition, health, enrichment, and training. * Prepare, administer and record daily medications as required. * Implement daily animal enrichment and training programs. * Maintain a professional level of cleanliness throughout the whole facility. * Once per week, assist with retail work in the facility gift shop. PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIRED: Active. This is a physically demanding position that requires stamina for long hours (standing for long periods of time) and the ability to work in varying weather conditions, often on uneven and wet terrain (bear habitats). Some heavy lifting - interns must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Sufficient mobility (bending, reaching, squatting), reliable vision and hearing are needed to ensure a safe work environment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Fortress of the Bear is located in a temperate rainforest. Be prepared for wet and cold weather conditions; members of the bear care team work primarily outside. Due to the tourist season nature of this internship, candidates should be prepared to wear a face mask throughout their work day, if spikes in covid/flu/avian flu are announced. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Interns must have, or be enrolled in, a college program working towards a degree in zoology, animal behavior, biology or a related field. Previous experience of working in a zoological environment is preferred, though not necessary. We'd love to hear about any experience you have with public speaking, and whether or not you speak more than one language. For example, if you have video footage of yourself conducting a keeper talk, we'd love to see it! SKILLS NEEDED: * Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Successful candidates will be provided a bear care manual to study prior to arrival in Sitka, outlining husbandry practices, daily duties and the history of our facility.
