Sixth Avenue, started in New York City in 1984, was collapsing.
After a dispute over use of company funds, Leon removed Billy and Mike from the board in December 2001.
In 2009, employees said, sales were increasing despite a weak economy, and Billy and Mike saw new opportunities after the 700-store Circuit City chain folded.
Leon declined to be interviewed for this article, but in a 2010 Record interview, he said he sold the company to Billy and Mike and walked away because he was tired of the fighting.
In 2010, two weeks before one of retail's biggest sales days of the year, Black Friday, the company abandoned the system and switched back to its former computer platform, according to a former technology executive for Sixth Avenue.
Sixth Avenue was holding unofficial clearance sales during the summer of 2011, former Sixth Avenue management employees said, selling items at as much as 70 percent off.
