Skandia company history timeline

1986

In 1986 the company acquired the share capital of Almendahl Investment Co. and Internationell Assurans AB. It also began a series of real estate acquisitions with 20 percent of the shares in Fastighetsbolagets Hufvudstaden and the majority of the shares in Fastighets AB Stockholm Badhus.

1987

In 1987, Skandia opened a member financial services company, American Skandia Life Assurance, in Shelton Connecticut.

1990

1990: Skandia is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

1993

In 1993, Skandia took the theory one step further and began supplementing its annual report--which reports on the company's traditional assets--with an IC report.

1996

In 1996 it represented nearly 50 percent; a year later, that total was 70 percent, and Skandia was garnering praise in Europe and the United States for the strength of its products.

1997

The company became a global Fortune 500 company in 1997.

2000

American Skandia's business flourished, and by the year 2000 had more than US$36 billion in client assets.

After a peak in the first half of 2000, the world's stock markets experienced sharply falling prices--and the United States (where Skandia had significant interests) was particularly hit hard.

2000: Skandia CEO Lars-Eric Petersson declares that the restructuring of Skandia into a savings and assets management company is complete.

2003

In 2003 the operations in North America, American Skandia, were acquired by Prudential Financial.

2005

In 2005 South African financial services group Old Mutual launched a $6.5bn (£3.6bn) bid to acquire majority control of Skandia, which was met with resistance from some of Skandia's shareholders and directors.

2012

In March 2012 Old Mutual sold the Nordic businesses (Sweden, Denmark, Norway) to the Swedish-based Skandia Liv, a partly mutual assurer, in an all-cash deal for £2.1bn.

2014

Skandia UK, Skandia International and the Skandia European businesses outside the Nordic region were rebranded as 'Old Mutual Wealth' in September 2014.
