  • Postdoctoral Fellow - Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy

    Md Anderson Cancer Center

    Remote job

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, TX. The fellow will work under the mentorship of Dr. Palaniraja Thandapani. The Thandapani Lab studies tRNA expression and epitranscriptomic regulation of gene expression in both normal and malignant hematopoiesis. We recently identified altered tRNA biogenesis as a marker of tumor-specific amino acid demand in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) (Nature, 2021). These findings highlight how tRNA deregulation can uncover novel, targetable metabolic and translational vulnerabilities in cancer. To advance this work, the lab leverages MDACC's extensive resources in primary human samples, patient-derived xenografts, and state-of-the-art genomic platforms. We apply next-generation and Nanopore sequencing to profile tRNA expression and epitranscriptomic changes across leukemia subtypes and normal hematopoietic compartments. These datasets are integrated with functional CRISPR screens, mechanistic approaches, and innovative therapeutic strategies (e.g., dietary modulation, RNA therapeutics, synthetic lethality) to define how tRNA dysregulation drives malignancy and to develop new therapeutic avenues for hematologic cancers. This position places strong emphasis on individualized mentoring, setting clear goals and timelines to support successful transition to academic or industry careers based on the fellow's interests. The lab offers direct, hands-on mentorship from a young PI while also providing access to guidance from senior faculty in the department and across the Division of Cancer Medicine. MD Anderson is part of the vibrant UT medical and scientific community located in the highly affordable and diverse Houston metropolis. All duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with institutional policies, ethical research standards, and applicable federal and state regulations. *LEARNING OBJECTIVES* The Postdoctoral Fellow will: - Design and conduct experiments, analyze data, and prepare manuscripts. - Participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, and research seminars. - Lead research focused on understanding how dysregulation of tRNA biogenesis contributes to hematologic malignancies. - Receive training in experimental design, data analysis, scientific writing, and oral presentation. - Build the skills necessary for independent career progression in academia or industry. *ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS* Individuals with a PhD degree in RNA biology, Genetics, Hematology, Chemistry or related fields. Candidate should have strong background in molecular biology, RNA biology, genomics, genetics, or related fields. Preferred: prior experience studying hematopoiesis/ leukemia biology, mouse genetics and CRISPR screening. Proven track record of publications, excellent written and oral communication skills are required. *ADDITIONAL APPLICATION INFORMATION* For more information, visit the Thandapani lab webpage at *********************************************************************************************** *POSITION INFORMATION* MD Anderson offers full-time postdoc positions with a ******************************************************************************************************* tuition benefits, educational opportunities, and individual and team recognition Offsite work arrangements are subject to approval and may be modified or revoked at any time based on business needs, performance considerations, or regulatory requirements. A Postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology and Malignancy, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, United States. This position reports to Dr. Pavan Bachireddy in the Department of Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow interested in understanding the evolutionary dynamics of measurable residual disease (MRD) progression within the bone marrow microenvironment. Our lab uses unbiased, high-throughput technologies to decode the rules of interaction among diverse cell types in the tumor milieu that determine patient outcomes to cancer immunotherapy, primarily in hematologic malignancies (NEJM 2016; Cell 2018; Sci Transl Med 2020; Blood 2021; Cell Reports 2021; Cancer Cell 2023). We are especially interested in Fellows with molecular biology expertise to interrogate subclonal evolution, using integrative analyses of jointly measured transcriptomic, proteomic and epigenomic measurements at single cell resolution. Furthermore, in vitro genome-editing and in vivo experiments will be critical approaches to validate and extend our findings. The Postdoctoral Fellow will have access to the extensive research platforms at MD Anderson and the broader Texas Medical Center, including computation clusters, single-cell core facilities, epigenetics core facilities, flow cytometry facilities, drug screening cores, and animal colonies, among many others. Dr. Bachireddy is also deeply committed to the career growth and success for each member of the laboratory. Such mentorship should be intentional, planned and tailored to each member of the group - thus the laboratory operates with a primary goal of fostering career goals and development for each individual. The fellow will lead work focused on 1) interrogation of factors defining MRD; 2) evolutionary modeling of cancer-immune interactions over time and 3) identification of programs driving MRD progression across myeloid malignancies, using multiple cutting-edge technologies as well as standard cell culture and immunologic approaches. Because Dr. Bachireddy is also the Scientific Director of the ECLIPSE (Evolution of Cancer, Leukemia and Immunity Post Stem Cell transplant) platform, the fellow will have significant interaction and access to the vast immunogenomic and computational resources of the physically adjacent ECLIPSE platform. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, independent thinker with a tremendous work ethic. The position will require great planning and organizational skills.
