1871

1875

1875 -- The first buildings on campus:

Smith College opened in the fall of 1875 with 14 students and six faculty.

1877

In 1878 Washburn House, Tenney House, and Pierce Hall were all added to campus

1883

Philander Smith College was chartered as a four-year college on March 3, 1883.

1888

The first baccalaureate degree was conferred in 1888.

1891

The Alumni Gym was built in 1891

1893

Green Street Houses: Hubbard, Lawrence and Morris were built in 1893

The first women’s college basketball game, between Smith’s freshman and sophomore teams, was played there in 1893.

1895

Dickinson House opened in 1895

1900

Developments in the Early 1900's

The Green Street Houses were completed in 1900 with Tyler House opening

1903

Chapin House was added in 1903 to accommodate growing student populations

1906

On December 13, 1906, Smith formalized his intentions, and two years later, William Smith School for Women enrolled its first class of 18 students, although there were 20 by the end of the year.

1910

Neilson Library and John M. Green Hall were built in 1910, as were sister houses Northrop and Gillett, as well as Haven and Wesley Houses

1914

Burton Hall was built in 1914 to accommodate the expanding Sciences

1924

Since 1924 qualified students have spent their junior year abroad; full-year programs are available in Florence, Italy; Hamburg, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland; and Paris, France.

1942

The United States Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Smith College was training grounds for junior officers of the Women's Reserve of the United States Naval Reserve (WAVES) and was nicknamed "USS Northampton". On August 28, 1942, a total of 120 women reported to the school for training.

1945

The first lost of a house occurred in 1945 when Dickinson House burned down

1947

1947: HathiTrust has volume 29, "The Case of Sancho de Almazán and Juan de la Cámara versus the Crown of Castile and the Town Council of Arenas (1514)" by Caroline B. Bourland.

1948

In July 1948 the site of the Little Rock Junior College, adjacent to the South end of Philander Smith's campus, was purchased.

1949

On March 30, 1949, after an extensive program of academic improvement, Philander Smith College was fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

1950

1951: HathiTrust has volume 36, "The Guild of St Ambrose, or Schoolmasters' Guild of Antwerp, 1529-1579" by Caroline B. Bourland.

1954

1954: HathiTrust has volume 40, "Continental and Colonial Servants in Eighteenth Century England" by J. Jean Hecht.

1956

1956: HathiTrust has volume 42, "The Public Physicians of Ancient Greece" by Louis Cohn-Haft.

1969

He was succeeded by Doctor Walter R. Hazzard, who took office as the seventh president of the college on July 1, 1969.

1983

Doctor Shockley was succeeded by Doctor Hazo W. Carter, who was elected unanimously July 19, 1983 by the Board of Trustees, and took office Aug.

1998

Upon Doctor Titus's retirement on June 30, 1998, Doctor Trudie Kibbe Reed was elected by the Board of Trustees in February 1998, becoming the eleventh and first woman president of Philander Smith College.

2004

In October 2004, the Board announced the selection of Doctor Walter M. Kimbrough as the 12th president.

2015

Selected by the Philander Smith College Board of Trustees, Roderick L. Smothers, Ph.D., took office as the College's 14th president on January 5, 2015.

In April 2015, the faculty adopted an open-access policy to make its scholarship publicly accessible online.
