The County was established in 1846 by the new Texas State Legislature and was named for General James Smith who fought for Texas'; independence and served during the Indian Wars.
One of earliest is Texas Business Directory for 1878-9: An Index to the Merchantile, Manufacturing and Professional Interests of the State, which is held by the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.
By 1879, “the largest and most elegant brick courthouse … within the state of Tennessee” had been constructed.
Opened to the public on February 1, 1908, the new structure, built at a cost of sixty-four thousand dollars, was operated as a toll bridge.
On May 3, 1936, traffic was opened on the sparkling new Cordell Hull bridge.
Cordell Hull, secretary of state under Franklin D. Roosevelt and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945, practiced law and called Carthage home for many years.
