What skills stand out on social media representative resumes?

Particularly as organizations are planning not just for the present but also for the post-pandemic future, where employees continue to work remotely and more flexibly than before. I believe that they will continue to want new employees who know how to use digital and remote tools and practices. So those that can comfortably use tools like Slack, Google Meets, and also disciplinary-specific media tools like Studio 6, VMIX, and Frankie, the better positioned they are for a new position. I also think students who have a wide range of skills and can problem solve (as opposed to being tied to one way of doing things) are far more valuable -- which should drive the way universities teach in the future. Finally, given the continued growth of social media, I think students who know how to use social media listening, analytics, and management tools will have a strong advantage and students who can effectively create content for social and understand audience.

What social media representative skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

If people need to take gap years, I would recommend that they continue to work on their communication skills. Read and write/create content for a wide range of audiences. Continue to learn and use technology. Look for opportunities to demonstrate leadership. And work on self-confidence. Volunteering for nonprofits that could use their help would be excellent. Those are great on resumes, will build skills, and the students will feel amazing helping others with their skills.

Digital, digital, digital. Arts and entertainment organizations have become digital media organizations during the pandemic and so technical skills in social media marketing, website development and maintenance, search engine optimization, video, audio, post-production, and live streaming are standouts. And I am not even certain that's an exhaustive list!

All journalists need a healthy sense of assertiveness. They need to be go-getters and self-starters who can self-manage. Because of the remote nature of a lot of work right now, not just journalistic practice, you're not going to have an editor or supervisor hanging over your shoulder and micro-managing your work. You need to be independent. And for that matter, journalism graduates are well positioned. They have to think critically, be able to analyze and contextualize rapidly developing phenomenon and communicate quickly and effectively to a general audience.

What hard/technical skills are most important for social media representatives?

Jamie Bowen Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Austin Peay State University

Any experience working with the Adobe Suite can go leaps and bounds in landing someone a job as a Communication Specialist. However, knowing how to use a camera to take pictures and video and then edit the footage can set them apart from the rest of the pack.
