ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Family Support Specialist is responsible for making decisions and taking actions appropriate to ensure that every child has a permanent home that provides physical and emotional safety and that each region has the resources needed to provide support for families. To ensure this occurs, the Family Support Specialist position has three main areas of focus:

Serve as the primary point of contact for families during deployments, conducting thorough needs assessments and coordinating appropriate care.
Connect families with volunteer host families, mentors, and community resources to ensure timely and effective support.
Coordinate short-term child care placements, mentorship connections, and other wraparound services to stabilize families in crisis.
Manage complex or high-need cases temporarily when regions experience staffing shortages, ensuring continuity of care and safety for children and families.
Training & Capacity Building
Onboard, train, and mentor new Family Support Managers, ensuring alignment with program standards and core values.

Monitor FSM performance and provide constructive feedback to strengthen skills and confidence.

Education:

TIMING, LOCATION AND COMPENSATION
Better Together seeks to fill this position as soon as possible. The job is full-time and may require some work in the evenings and on weekends. In addition, Family Support Specialists participate in our on-call schedule rotation. Better Together is headquartered in Naples, Florida. This position requires that candidates live in our Southwest Florida region, which includes Lee, Collier, Hendry, Glades, Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties.
A majority of your work time in this role will be spent in the community, helping families. Individuals in this role must be comfortable functioning and making decisions in crisis situations. This can involve personally helping individuals relocate to safe spaces and transporting to a safe space. Additionally, individuals in this role will be expected to attend weekly in-person or virtual team meetings and discuss the status of their cases with the team. There also will be quarterly in-person team meetings during which goals will be set and you will be expected to make suggestions on how to seize new opportunities.

The Impact of This Position:
This role leads The Shelters After School Program for children of survivors of domestic violence residing in the onsite Emergency Shelter. This role fosters student growth by providing mentorship, resource connections, and individualized support. By ensuring a safe, engaging environment and collaborating with families and community partners, it drives meaningful outcomes and equips students for success.
Non-Negotiables:
Associates or BA/BS degree in an applicable field, preferred.
Demonstrated success in delivering youth programming.
Experience providing childcare to school-aged children, leading youth recreation & youth camp programs, as a teachers assistant and/or equivalent experience
Completion of first aid and CPR class.
Must pass state & federal background checks, provide satisfactory references, and drug screening.
Proof of COVID19 vaccinations or exemption.
Successful completion of The Shelters Core Competency training upon hire.
Valid FL Drivers License.
What Youll Do:
Assist with curriculum activities and housekeeping as needed.
Collaborate with supervisor to organize field trips and learning-based events with community partners.
Collect and maintain participant data for quarterly reporting on a timely basis.
Develop and maintain a safe, enjoyable After School Program focused on character development and academic achievement.
Develop program goals, objectives, lesson plans, and calendars.
Enforce DCF Compliant safety regulations and manage participant behavior.
Facilitate developmentally stimulating experiences and create a positive, youth-centered environment.
Lead and participate in physical activities and games with emphasis on incorporating the outdoors as weather permits.
Meet with parents to discuss youths progress in After School Program.
Offer individual advocacy and counseling, including crisis intervention and safety planning to youth and/or parents, as needed.
Provide needs-based referrals for outside services to participants and families.
Supervise children to ensure safety and well-being.

The Family Support Specialist is responsible for making decisions and taking actions appropriate to ensure that every child has a permanent home that provides physical and emotional safety and that each region has the resources needed to provide support for families. A majority of your work time in this role will be spent in the community, helping families. Individuals in this role must be comfortable functioning and making decisions in crisis situations. This can involve personally helping individuals relocate to safe spaces and transporting to a safe space. Additionally, individuals in this role will be expected to attend weekly in-person or virtual team meetings and discuss the status of their cases with the team. In this role, you will provide group psychotherapy to patients diagnosed with a mental health or co-occurring disorder, including individual and family sessions as appropriate. It may require performance of interpreter duties, if bi-lingual, or implementation of the Department's Limited English Proficiency Plan. This position with the Department of Health in Lee County's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides basic breastfeeding education to WIC participants in various locations throughout Lee County. Peer counselors work in an assigned clinic and are available to WIC clients by phone, through use of a state issued cell phone, outside of normal work hours, i.e. evenings up till 9:00 pm week days and on week-ends. Time spent by Peer Counselors, contacting and assisting clients outside of regular work hours will be considered work time. Must get approval for any work time above 20 hours a week and cannot exceed 29 hours a week. Receives a caseload of WIC clients to manage and routinely makes contacts with all clients assigned by the local agency breastfeeding coordinator or local agency breastfeeding peer counseling coordinator. Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to WIC mothers to help them to successfully establish breastfeeding, overcome common barriers to breastfeeding, and prevent and handle common breastfeeding problems or concerns.
