What is it like to work at SOE

as a highschool student with a dream, what kind of education did you need to get hired?what would you suggest to someone wanting to get into the field?

Literally everyone in my studio had different levels of education, but I would definitely suggest at least trying to go to community college, if you can make it to a full uni. Work hard, don't settle, and be absolutely great at what you want to do...and then realize you don't know everything and keep learning. You can't get into this business just by being a fan or being in a clan or whatever; you'd be shocked at how many people think that since they played swg 60 hours a week, that means they'd be great employees on the game. The two aren't always related.

From what I've read it sounds like there was a lot of community backlash during SWG. Is this the part of the job that "was not a lot of fun"? Or was it working for SOE? What was your favorite memory working for SOE? Unless it was 100% soul sucking.

Lots of community backlash is the understatement of the year. My colleagues at other studios on other games like WoW or CoH would routinely give us a hard time about the difficulty of our community. It was a combination of the two, really. So SOE wasn't great, but neither was the community that I had the most constant exposure to (forum folks). I commented elsewhere on here that it was a really low percentage of players that actually used the forums, but boy were they vocal. All of the other folks, the non forumers were usually pretty nice and pleasant to deal with. I've got a couple of favorite memories: My first Christmas card from LucasFilm/LucasArts (which I still have), meeting Jim Lee, working with Valara (who is just fantastic), the fun spawn armies I created for players on the testservers, writing the SW lore that went with our game updates, and going to comic con.

As a fellow ex-Sonyite (SCEE in my case), I am interested to know if SOE felt like part of Sony. I don't think we ever had any real contact with anyone who worked there, even though we're all game devs. SCEA and SCEI studios, yeah, we had dealings with people all over. But never SOE. Maybe because they were (are?) largely PC based? What're your thoughts? Do you think that it was a good/bad thing that it was kinda its own thing?

It's interesting you bring this up because towards the end of my time there, we brought in a couple (literally just 2) of guys from SCEA to work with us on the ps3 version of DCU. It was pretty late in the game and rough going when I left, but obviously things got better since it's out now. Other than that we literally had no contact with the rest of Sony outside of some occasional appearances from SCEA employees at our town halls.

Man...I am so curious what was going on there internally after the NGE change. What was the atmosphere like? This was a time of huge backlash from the players, lots of venom on the forums. The game itself, in all reality, was broken. Was there any regret? What kind of dialog was management having? Was all the complaining having a real affect on the workplace or was it just being treated as noise? edit: grammar

I have been wondering this myself for so long. There are very few games that had the freedom that SWG did, then the NGE took all that away. OP - Did SOE have any plans to roll back after the NGE but decide not to go though with it?
