Software development engineer lead job description

We are looking for a talented Lead Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) who is going to take a role of evaluating and refining the quality strategy for our projects that currently consists of extensive automation suite, as well as manual testing.In this role you will be managing both SDETs as well as test analysts on the team in order to assure the releases of our products are of the right quality with the ideal blend of manual and automated testing.

The Service Tech team primarily supports the Customer Service team and our external customers by producing tools that help allow people to resolve a wide range of needs. This crosses many types of products and platforms to provide services for every game title that Blizzard actively supports and more. You will be a part of the development team, coordinating across disciplines with designers, artists, engineers, and quality assurance analysts.Everyone on our team is empowered to influence the direction of our products, and the ideal candidate will have a passion for quality and player experience.Blizzard offers a fun, creative, and technically challenging environment with excellent compensation and a full range of benefits.

We've transitioned to a work-from-home model and we're continuing to interview and hire during this time. This role is expected to begin as a remote position. We understand each person's circumstances may be unique and will work with you to explore possible interim options.
Responsibilities


Establish and deliver the quality strategy for a product based on the ideal blend of automation and manual testing Manage, recruit and lead a quality team consisting of SDETs, Test Analysts and TA lead Accountable for the quality of all deliverables, workflows and relationships for the quality team Work closely with development technical directors and program managers to align on the quality strategy Forecast and manage the product's test schedules, dependencies and resources Champion and influence software development best practices and the customer experience Drive identification, design and delivery for technical solutions (frameworks, tests, API hooks, tools) increasing test effectiveness and coverage, while reducing the cost of test execution Implement metrics, analyze test data and results to identify patterns, report on risk status to development partners, and influence software quality Share insights, solutions, and best practices within the team and across Blizzard


Requirements


Passion for Quality Assurance and software engineering Strong, proven programming skills (C#, .NET Core and Standard or Java) 5+ years of software engineering experience in a professional environment Architecture and creation of automation frameworks, test harnesses, and QA tools 4+ years of hands on testing experience Experience in team management and development of engineering talent

Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, related field or equivalent experience Experience with frontend testing using Selenium Experience with backend testing of RESTful APIs Experience with performance and stress testing such as with JMeter Familiarity with best practices for Continuous Testing within CI/CD pipelines Familiarity with Jenkins

About the Role

Our technology team works to build, launch, and evolve our internal applications and consumer-facing web applications. We implement modern agile best practices and fully automated CI/CD pipelines. The SDET role focuses on verifying the quality and reliability of the software. The Lead SDET focuses on advancing the whole SDET team, tools, and processes. You must be results-driven and able to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do

Collaborate with Product Management to find and close requirements gaps and create test plans Work closely with Software Engineers to deliver new functionality Investigate and resolve complex bugs in unfamiliar code Mentor other SDETs and actively follow up with and unblock team members Lead system and testing improvement efforts Regularly update repos and application frameworks for supporting tools Identify and propose solutions to process inefficiencies Proactively investigate testing and tooling issues


What We Look For


5+ years of experience testing software applications 2+ years of experience leading and helping other Test Engineers Ability to lead and help other team members while also contributing Must have strong understanding of Ruby/RSPEC Must have experience with using API to improve Front End Testing Experience in POM, Efficient E2E Testing, and Advanced Cypress Topics Ability to understand and help maintain code pipelines in GitHub Experience in implementing new testing tools and frameworks
Ability to prioritize and deliver stories independently, communicate bugs and risks Ability to write complex SQL queries to validate data changes or troubleshoot issues

What You'll Contribute
Develop, execute, and maintain comprehensive test automation framework.Participate in the full software development lifecycle and in software testing lifecycle.Collaborate in an Agile engineering process as a member of a SCRUM team, contributing to a high-quality deliverable product each sprint.Create and execute test cases from requirements/user stories.Perform hands-on testing and develop automated tests.Generate QA reports for internal/external use.Lead the QA of the project to ensure the release of quality software.Contribute to quality engineering process improvements and CI/CD.Research Industry trends for test automation, new tools and technologies.Perform cross browser testing such as Chrome, MSEdge, Firefox and Safari.Generate metrics and information that improve development practices on the team.Mentor others in testing and contributing to automation framework.

What We're Seeking
Bachelors' Degree in Computer Science, Applications Systems Design, or other related Data Processing field of study.Strong experience in developing and maintaining automated tests, and executing manual and exploratory testing.Knowledge of QA in a commercial software environment.Hands-on experience with test automation tools such as Cypress, Selenium WebDriver, Jmeter, RestAssured, BDD Cucumber, and WebdriverIO.Strong understanding of quality assurance best practices.Strong in programming languages such as Java or JavaScript, and proficiency in Selenium Webdriver, Python, and Linux shell scripting.Familiarity with JIRA for issue tracking, and qTest for test case management.CICD Knowledge using Jenkins and Git.Must be very hands on, passionate about quality, and willing to collaborate with multiple teams for testing.Ability to lead projects, train, and mentor junior team members.Work in a dynamic environment and passionate in continuous growth and learning Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes and AWS Cloud environment is a plus.
