Determines quality improvement parameters by identifying statistical methods relevant to manufacturing processes. Initiates process improvement projects to increase efficiency, reduce costs, simplify processes and improve quality. A3 Process Improvement Support - Be a voice & leader supporting our Process Engineering team. Continuous Improvement Validation - Lead our Gemba walks capturing feedback from our associates (VOC) to verify and validate improvements made. Waste stream support - Process flow analysis and continuous improvement; focus on Waste Reduction. Raw Material Input Review - Conduct review of raw material to production as support for both Process Engineering and Product Development teams. Supports process and test method validation activities by developing and executing protocols for new or existing processes. Develops and implements methods and procedures for disposition of nonconforming material and ensures that effective root cause analysis is conducted; tracks implementation of corrective/preventive actions. Own the On Hold process - Drive continuous improvement through nonconforming material analysis as a leading indicator. Interfaces with customers and vendors to provide technical support for our products and assures quality of incoming materials; Issue CARs & SCARs as required. Supports research and development and manufacturing departments to ensure successful transition of products and processes from design to production. Coordinates ISO Quality Management Systems requirements and audits. Other related duties as assigned. Primary Responsibilities Write maintainable, clean, re-usable, object-oriented, and efficient programming code in compliance with department standards and templates. Work within source control utilizing branching, merging, proper check-in procedures, and passing of continuous builds to ensure that software is always releasable. Practice Test Driven Development (TDD) and ensuring that unit tests are created prior to writing programming code and that any programming code is structured in such a way to maximize testability. Resolve software bugs in the programming code and modify unit tests to prevent future regression. Perform various types of testing including black box, white box, integration, functional, systems, sanity, smoke, regression, acceptance, stress, load, performance, usability, installation, recovery, security, compatibility, and more on software systems. Work within the context of department processes and procedures Peer review programming code and participate in code reviews. Learn and understand the technical details of all relevant products and having hands-on familiarity of the system as required. Work with management to define and establish processes, templates, and standards related to software development and to continually improve the quality of the process. Contribute fresh, new ideas during developer meetings demonstrating a commitment on-going learning. Utilizing code coverage, code metrics, and other tools to improve quality of code. Skills Required A minimum of 6 years of demonstrated prior work experience conducting the primary responsibilities outlined in this . Proficient English written and verbal communication skills is essential since you will need to communicate with other offices on the phone. Exceptional knowledge and skills with C#/.NET is essential. Demonstrated expertise in WinForms, WCF, MVC, MVVM, WPF, and RESTful Web Services. Exceptional knowledge of JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks such as React. Demonstrated expertise with the latest versions of SQL Server creating relational database objects (tables, columns, stored procedures, scalar and table-valued functions, etc.) Ability to evaluate/address application and database performance issues. Understanding of Microservices, SaaS, & various Cloud offerings. Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable cloud-based solutions. About This Role The Automation Engineer III provides 24/7 process controls/automation technical site support to the Biogen 900 Davis drive, NC manufacturing site. In addition, this role manages multiple small OPEX/CAPEX projects and continuous improvement initiatives that support the site from initial conception to final closure. The Automation Engineer III prioritizes between supporting the site and managing their assigned projects and tasks. What you'll do System Design and Implementation: Specify, design, develop, install, commission, and qualify process control and automation solutions in direct support of commercial and clinical manufacturing operations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand process requirements and develop control system specifications. Configure and program Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems. Instrumentation and Control System Integration: Specify and select appropriate instrumentation for process monitoring and control. Integrate various control systems and devices to ensure seamless communication and coordination. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to control system integration. Validation and Compliance: Ensure all automation systems comply with regulatory requirements, including cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) standards. Participate in validation activities, including writing and executing validation protocols. Maintain documentation in accordance with industry and company standards. Provide technical assistance to site quality systems through investigations, control system assessments, and corrective/preventative support to ensure a compliant GMP workplace. Work with the Site Quality units to ensure deviations and CAPAs are completed ensuring due dates are met in a timely manner. Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimization, reliability improvement, and cost reduction through automation. Implement changes to enhance system performance and reliability. Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to recommend improvements. Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Provide technical support diagnosing and resolving automation systems issues in a timely manner. Develop and implement preventive maintenance procedures for control systems. Participate in on-call rotation for technical issues. Possible night shift support when/if needed in the future. Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including process engineers, validation specialists, and maintenance teams. Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and external vendors. Provide training to operations and maintenance personnel on control system functionalities. Operating expense and small capital projects support: Prepare project estimates for control/automation design, equipment, installation, labor, materials, and other related costs. Prepare project forecasts and schedules and tracks costs. Concurrently manage and execute or participate as a team member on multi-disciplined automation and controls capital and operating expense projects from inception to project completion in support of site operations ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, company standards, operational requirements and business needs are met. Ensure selection of new control system equipment and instrumentation assuring it meets all regulatory requirements and all instrumentation is correct for the intended use. Perform a lead role with site technical departments to develop standards for control systems and instrumentation for new and existing equipment. Experience with validation processes and documentation: Writing user requirements, system functional/design documents, and test protocols experience. Must be willing to participate in an on-call rotation and possible shift coverage. Understands risks and associated controls with working in electrically classified areas. Preferred Qualifications Siemens PLCs and HMIs experience is a plus. Manufacturing Execution Systems experience is a plus.
