Quantum Software Intern
Phasecraft
Software engineer lead job in Washington, DC
Phasecraft is the quantum algorithms company. We are building the mathematical foundations for quantum computing applications that solve real-world problems. Founded in 2019 by Toby Cubitt, Ashley Montanaro and John Morton, we are based in London and Bristol in the UK and opened an office in Washington DC in 2024, led by Steve Flammia. In 2025 we completed a $34m Series B funding round co-led by Plural, existing investor Playground Global, and Novo Holdings' Quantum Fund in its first direct quantum software investment.
Phasecraft's unprecedented access to today's best quantum computers - through partnerships with Google, IBM, Quantinuum and QuEra - provides us with unique opportunities to develop foundational IP, inform the development of next-generation quantum hardware, and accelerate commercialization of high-value breakthroughs.
We are delighted to launch our 2026 Quantum Software Internship programme. As a Quantum Software Intern you will have the opportunity to join the Phasecraft team for a few (typically 3) months. Not only will you work on a technical research project focusing on the design, implementation or analysis of quantum algorithms and related techniques in near-term quantum computing, but you will also have the chance to experience life in a young and vibrant startup that is constantly pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of quantum computing. Past projects have ranged from theoretical work on the underpinning mathematics of quantum algorithms to writing code for real or simulated quantum hardware.
Our recent internship programmes have proven to be meaningful and successful. In 2022 we hired our first permanent staff member who had previously participated in our Internship programme and we have several ongoing collaborations with former interns. Some of the work undertaken during internships has also been published (Optimizing fermionic encodings for both Hamiltonian and hardware and Extracting the spin excitation spectrum of a fermionic system using a quantum processor). Our team has enjoyed working on challenging projects with talented interns with diverse academic backgrounds including Quantum Information Theory, Materials Science, Physics and Computer Science.
The internship is a paid position with a competitive salary. Interns are based with the Phasecraft team in our offices in Bristol and London in the UK and Washington DC in the US. Internships usually take place over the summer months, though dates can be flexible.
As a Quantum Software Intern, we expect the ideal candidate will have experience in the implementation of advanced quantum algorithms or otherwise strong evidence of potential to contribute to this area. A background in quantum computing is not necessarily required nor is a track record of publishing scientific papers in this area; however the candidate should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in quantum computing through formal or independent studies.
Requirements
Essential criteria:
Good understanding of algorithms and algorithmic analysis.
Strong programming skills, including in Python.
Bachelor or Masters degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or closely related field.
Enthusiasm for learning and novel research.
Desirable criteria:
Exposure to quantum computing and/or quantum information theory, via formal or independent studies.

Full Stack Software Engineer
Switchboard 2.7
Software engineer lead job in Washington, DC
During the 2024 election cycle, Switchboard worked with over 2,700 campaigns from school board to Senate and Presidential races, strengthening Democratic digital fundraising and organizing programs up and down the ballot. In addition to the automated messaging platform that we launched in 2021 through which organizations have sent billions of messages, over the last year we've continued to build out an integrated suite of tools, including an emailer, forms builder, and fundraising analytics dashboards, with the goal of bringing together coordination across outreach channels, powerful analytics, and an easy-to-use platform.
As a Full Stack SoftwareEngineer, you'll play a foundational role in architecting and building infrastructure and web applications for Switchboard, leveraging modern technology platforms and frameworks. We're looking for engineers who have experience and are excited about working at all levels of the stack, from backend data systems to frontend web applications. Projects will range from setting up new cloud-hosted services, to deploying existing open source projects, to building new tools from scratch. Ideal candidates should be comfortable jumping into new areas, scoping projects, and executing on them.
As a member of our small team, you'll take on significant ownership over large parts of our codebase that are critical to the success of the product.
Responsibilities Include:
Design and build backend infrastructure to support evolving data models and integrations with third-party products.
Develop web applications to support the needs of campaign staffers, sometimes deploying existing open source projects and other times developing new tools from scratch.
Collaborate with team members and campaign staffers outside the org to define, implement, and test new features and tools.
Develop and manage key components of our technical setup, including code deployment, testing infrastructure, the security of our data and systems, and performance management.
Help establish and contribute to a positive engineering culture, with best practices around testing, code quality, security, and automation to help reduce errors and maintenance costs.
Ideal Candidates:
3+ years experience building and deploying large-scale web applications, with an eye towards adaptability, scalability, and reliability.
Knowledge of Python, JavaScript, or the ability to learn them quickly. (e.g. we use Django Rest Framework on the backend, and NextJS on the frontend)
Experience setting up and managing cloud-hosted databases, distributed systems, and data pipelines. (e.g. we use RDS Postgres on AWS)
Experience with AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or other cloud service providers.
Communicate effectively within teams and with outside partners.
Comfortable taking on projects in new areas for them, learning quickly to develop the expertise and execute on those projects.
Compensation
$160k-$215k annual salary and an equity grant depending on experience
Switchboard covers 100% of health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and 80% for dependents
21 days of paid time off plus federal holidays

* Design and implement scalable, consistent approaches for customer engagement and project execution
* Develop architectural solutions that improve consistency and scalability across projects
* Collaborate with internal engineering, product, and customer teams to ensure successful outcomes

* Strong coder with demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python
* Broad technical experience across softwareengineering, operating systems, and some hardware
* Experience supporting integration and deployment of complex systems
* Exceptional problem-solving skills and a proven ability to thrive and innovate independently within highly ambiguous and rapidly evolving operational environments
* Excellent communication skills and focus on solving customer problems
Nice to have:
* Prior experience working with government customers, defense contractors, or in military environments
* Familiarity with system architecture and designing scalable solutions
* Experience in defense, automotive, robotics, or adjacent industries
Security Requirements:
* Must be a U.S. Citizen
* Must hold or be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance
