Software engineering internship job in Pleasanton, CA
It all started in sunny San Diego, California in 2004 when a visionary engineer, Fred Luddy, saw the potential to transform how we work. Fast forward to today - ServiceNow stands as a global market leader, bringing innovative AI-enhanced technology to over 8,100 customers, including 85% of the Fortune 500 . Our intelligent cloud-based platform seamlessly connects people, systems, and processes to empower organizations to find smarter, faster, and better ways to work. But this is just the beginning of our journey. Join us as we pursue our purpose to make the world work better for everyone.
Job Description
Team
Join the Global Cloud Services organization's FinOps Tools team, which is building ServiceNow's next-generation analytics and financial governance platform. Our team owns the full modern data stack: Trino for distributed queries, dbt for transformations, Iceberg for lakehouse architecture, Lightdash for business intelligence, and Argo Workflows for orchestration. You will be the founding engineer dedicated to building the Cloud Development Platform that empowers our 30+ data practitioners (data scientists, analysts, and FinOps engineers) to collaborate and productionize analytics at scale.
Role
We are building a cloud-native data development platform that bridges the gap between exploratory analysis and production-grade workflows. As our founding Staff Software Developer focused on Cloud Development Infrastructure, you will design, architect, and rapidly implement a platform built on VS Code, Coder, and Jupyter that seamlessly integrates with our existing data stack (Trino, dbt, Iceberg, Lightdash, Argo Workflows).
You will establish opinionated, automated pathways from notebook experimentation to production pipelines, moving at startup speed within an enterprise environment. This role demands aggressive execution: working prototype in 3 months, production-ready platform in 6 months.
This is a unique opportunity to build from the ground up and define how data development happens at ServiceNow's scale.
What you get to do in this role:
Design and develop scalable, maintainable, and reusable software components with a strong emphasis on performance and reliability.
Collaborate with product managers to translate requirements into well-architected solutions, owning features from design through delivery
Build intuitive and extensible user experiences using modern UI frameworks, ensuring flexibility for customer-specific needs.
Contribute to the design and implementation of new products and features while enhancing existing product capabilities.
Integrate automated testing into development workflows to ensure consistent quality across releases.
Participate in design and code reviews ensuring best practices in performance, maintainability, and testability.
Develop comprehensive test strategies covering functional, regression, integration and performance aspects
Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement by sharing best practices in engineering and quality
Promote a culture of engineering craftsmanship, knowledge-sharing, and thoughtful quality practices across the team.
Technical Leadership & Architecture
Design and architect the foundational cloud development platform for notebook-based data workflows
Lead technical decision-making on workspace provisioning, developer experience, and productionization pathways
Establish best practices for notebook-to-production workflows, including git integration, parameterization, validation, and automated deployment
Drive innovation in data development platforms, leveraging AI/ML tools for enhanced developer productivity
Move fast: deliver working MVP in 3 months, production system scale in 6 months
Hands-On Development
Build and customize cloud workspace infrastructure using Coder (open source) on Kubernetes
Develop VS Code extensions (TypeScript) for productionization workflows: notebook validation, parameterization, and Argo Workflow generation
Implement opinionated notebook templates and validation rules for production-ready data pipelines
Create seamless integrations between notebooks and ServiceNow's data stack: Trino queries, Iceberg table outputs, Lightdash previews, dbt transformations
Build backend services (Python) for workflow orchestration, notebook parsing, and metadata management
Deploy JupyterHub initially, then progressively replace components with custom platform features based on user feedback
Platform Foundation
Design container images with embedded security policies, pre-configured data access to Trino/Iceberg tables, and optimized dependencies
Implement git-native workflows with automated notebook versioning, code review integration, and CI/CD pipelines
Build observability and monitoring for workspace health, user activity, and pipeline success rates
Establish infrastructure foundation that scales from 5 early adopters to 30+ practitioners within first year
Developer Experience & Automation
Create "template-based" notebook workflows with opinionated structure: parameterization (Papermill-style), Iceberg table outputs, validation checkpoints
Build CLI and UI tooling for one-click productionization: notebook → Argo Workflow with minimal manual intervention
Establish developer guardrails: credential management, data access policies, resource quotas
Collaborate closely with early adopter data scientists to rapidly iterate on workflows and validate usability
Prioritize platform stability and clear productionization paths over feature breadth in first 6 months
AI-Driven Development
Leverage cutting-edge AI development tools (e.g.. Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development velocity
Establish AI-augmented development practices and mentor future team members on effective AI tool utilization
Drive innovation in AI-assisted code generation, testing, and platform optimization
Collaboration & Integration
Work autonomously with guidance from Engineering and FinOps leadership
Collaborate with DevOps team on Kubernetes infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and security policies
Partner with FinOps Tools team members working on Trino, dbt, Lightdash, and Iceberg to ensure seamless integrations
Contribute to open-source projects in the notebook and developer tooling ecosystem

With Flex Work, we're combining the best of both worlds: in-person time and remote. Our approach enables our teams to deepen connections, maintain a strong community, and do their best work. We know that flexibility can take shape in many ways, so rather than a number of required days in-office each week, we simply spend at least half (50%) of our time each quarter in the office or in the field with our customers, prospects, and partners (depending on role). This means you'll have the freedom to create a flexible schedule that caters to your business, team, and personal needs, while being intentional to make the most of time spent together. Those in our remote "home office" roles also have the opportunity to come together in our offices for important moments that matter.

What You'll Do
Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or related UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and - when needed - C++.
Define and enforce best-practices for Windows desktop development across the codebase: code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability.
Drive accessibility efforts: integrate and validate support for accessibility APIs (e.g. Microsoft UI Automation or other relevant Windows accessibility frameworks), ensure UI controls, focus management, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and usability for users with disabilities.
Collaborate closely with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and long-term roadmap for the Windows platform.
Take ownership of full lifecycle of features: conception → design → implementation → testing → release → maintenance. Ensure quality, reliability, and consistency across releases.
Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, or compatibility problems - and propose robust architectural or design solutions.
An ideal candidate should have
Required:
3+ in Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or similar), C#, XAML - and ideally additional experience with native Windows code (C++, Win32/WinRT/COM).
Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed code (.NET) and native code.
Proven track record of designing, building, and shipping production-quality desktop applications, with an emphasis on reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.
Strong experience with accessibility APIs on Windows (e.g. Microsoft UI Automation or similar), and a dedication to building accessible and inclusive software.
Excellent software engineering fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading or asynchronous programming (where relevant).
Experience leading technical design, mentoring other engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions.
Strong communication skills; ability to articulate tradeoffs, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and drive consensus.
A user-centric mindset: focus on building polished, intuitive, and accessible experiences for end users.
Preferred / Bonus:
Experience with writing automated tests for UI - unit tests, integration tests, UI automation tests; familiarity with relevant testing frameworks.
Experience with performance optimization for desktop apps (memory usage, startup time, rendering performance, high-DPI support, responsiveness under load).
Experience with localization/globalization, right-to-left UI support, internationalization, accessibility for multiple regions.
Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop applications.
Previous experience in shaping CI/CD workflows, release pipelines, and deployment strategies for desktop applications.
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of feature areas or modules and drive them long-term, including maintenance, refactoring, and technical debt management.
What we offer
A high-impact role: you will define architecture, shape the future of our Windows product, and directly influence what millions of users see and experience.
A collaborative, flat-structure engineering culture - you are not just a coder, but a builder and a decision-maker.
Opportunities to lead - mentor others, steer technical direction, and grow into broader technical leadership (e.g. Tech Lead, Architect).
Flexibility, autonomy, and responsibility: you define how to solve problems, own features end-to-end, and contribute to long-term product vision.
A purpose-driven mission: building software that's reliable, accessible, and user-centered - making a real difference for people.
