Job Description
Join our team as a Part Time Conservation and Parks Technician at Fernbank Park but will perform duties at Embshoff Woods Nature Preserve, Werk Road Property and Fernbank Park.

A successful Part Time Conservation and Parks Technician perform a variety of natural resources and semi-skilled labor in developed and natural park areas. This position is an excellent opportunity to work outdoors and gain conservation and natural resources skills. The C&P tech assists in maintenance of park facilities, grounds, landscape beds, habitat, trails and equipment. Employee proceeds alone or with coworkers on regular duties, with guidance from supervisor. Refers unusual or difficult problems or situations to immediate supervisor. Required work on weekends, holidays, evenings and work outside of normal schedule.
Responsibilities:
Assists with removal of invasive and nuisance plants from natural areas. Mows and bush-hogs grass and brush land areas. Collects, processes and plants native plants and seeds. Assists in collecting data on park flora and fauna and conducting wildlife surveys. Performs various manual labor tasks to construct and maintain Great Parks' trails, inspects trail conditions. Collects information to advise manager or functional supervisor and implements based on need.
Assists in the executing grounds and horticulture duties including mowing, planting, mulching and maintaining plants, flowers, shrubs and trees, prune trees and shrubs, weeds landscape beds, and removes leaf debris.
Assists with minor repairs to buildings, facilities and roadways, including minor plumbing repairs, rough carpentry, masonry, painting, replacing signs, repairing roadways and trails by patching potholes, line striping, and other maintenance practices.
Performs janitorial duties in all areas. Picks up litter, sweeps and mops floors, empties wastebaskets, and cleans restroom facilities.
Assists with minor mechanical repairs and performs routine preventive maintenance to small gasoline engines in tractors, mowers, pumps, trucksters, trucks, and other equipment. Changes oil, lubricates moving parts, checks fluid levels, replaces belts, and performs other basic mechanical maintenance responsibilities.
Performs job responsibilities in accordance with performance expectations, and within Great Parks' policy and procedure. Exhibits regular and predictable attendance and punctuality. Works assigned schedule and demonstrated willingness and ability to work outside of regular schedule as required and approved.
QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is:
High School degree or GED and some prior experience or education in parks & recreation, natural resources, facility management, horticulture, grounds maintenance, or related field.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSE OF CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
State Motor Vehicle Operator's License that meets GPHC current carrier guidelines.

Duties Description The Division of Lands & Forests' State Forests Program, in St. Lawrence County, manages Reforestation Areas and Multiple-Use Areas in a sustainable manner by promoting ecosystem health, enhancing biodiversity, and protecting soil and water resources while providing recreational, social, and economic benefits to the people of New York State. Forest technicians support these efforts through on-the-ground data collection, treatment implementation, and restoration. The position offers the opportunity to engage in forest management, forest recreation, data collection,and monitoring, in collaboration with a dedicated team. Safety and equipment training will be provided as needed.
Principle Duties:
* Conduct various forest measurements and collect inventory plot data using map and compass, a hand-held data collector and GPS unit, BAF prism, clinometer, Biltmore stick, data sheets, and other related forestry equipment, using standard procedures.
* Assist with inventory plot layout, stand type mapping, and stand management recommendations using ArcGIS Pro.
* Input field data into the State Forest inventory program.
* Assist with public education/ presentations.
* Assist with various Unit Management Planning projects.
* Assist Foresters with timber sales including marking based upon a written prescription, performing timber volume calculations, and conducting
administration.
* Assist with silvicultural treatments, restoration planting, and seed collection.
* Assist with forest recreation duties.
* Assist with invasive species control and other forest health related duties.
Use ESRI GIS tools (Field Maps and ArcGIS Pro) to collect and report field data, create maps, etc.
Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including twelve (12) semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture
OR
One (1) year of technical forestry experience in one (1) or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Duties Description The Division of Lands & Forests' Forest Health Program works to protect New York's forest ecosystems from pests, diseases, and invasive species. Forest technicians support forest health efforts through on-the-ground surveys, treatment implementation, and restoration. The position offers the opportunity to engage in forest management, survey and monitoring, and applied research in collaboration with a dedicated statewide team. Some travel within the region is required. Safety and equipment training will be provided as needed.
Principal Duties
* Implement manual and chemical control of priority invasive species, including protective treatments to preserve high-value or ecologically significant tree species. Conduct pre- and post-treatment monitoring and maintain accurate digital field records. Pesticide applications may include foliar, soil, or trunk injection treatments, conducted under certified supervision and in accordance with label instructions.
* Conduct forest inventory and tree health assessments, and utilize forestry equipment for stand improvement or silvicultural experiments.
* Collect data in established forest monitoring plots; deploy and monitor insect traps and perform visual surveys to detect priority forest pests and diseases; assist with aerial surveys and subsequent ground-truthing to verify and identify tree damage; perform site visits on public and private land to diagnose tree-health issues.
* Assist with silvicultural treatments, restoration planting, and seed collection.
* Provide basic technical information to partners and the public; assist with outreach efforts, participate in annual forest health trainings.
* Use ESRI GIS tools (Field Maps) to collect and report field data.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in forestry, which must include at least one course in three or more of the following areas: botany, dendrology, forest biology, forest ecology, forest ecosystem management, forest entomology, forest health, forest mensuration, forest pathology, forest protection, forest soils, general soils, geographic information systems, land surveying, and silviculture.
OR
One year of technical forestry experience in one or more of the following areas: forest management, including sale and removal of timber products; nursery management, including the transplanting of tree or shrub seedlings; forest pest management, including control of diseases and insect pests.
Preferred knowledge and skills:
* Educational Background: Completed coursework in forestry, environmental studies, ecology, natural resource management, conservation biology, or wildlife biology. Experience identifying common tree species of New York and the pests that
impact them.
* Invasive Species Expertise: Knowledgeable about invasive species, identification, and control techniques.
* Mapping and Field Skills: Proficient in using maps, GPS, and GIS for effective site location and recording during surveys.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
