DiagnosticMedicalSonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.
A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) variable shifts.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
* Perform diagnosticsonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
* Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
* Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
* Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam.
* Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
* Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
* Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
* Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
* Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
* Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
* Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
* Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
* Process billing via RIS.
* Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
* Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
* Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
* Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols.
* Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
* Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations.
* Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment.
* Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums.
* Maintain RDMS and in good standing.
* If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* Graduate of an accredited school in DiagnosticMedicalSonography and in good standing
* If working within the OBGYN/Women's Health Institute, must be a Registered DiagnosticSonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for DiagnosticMedicalSonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire. Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire.
* If working within the Imaging Institute, must be a Registered DiagnosticSonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for DiagnosticMedicalSonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire. Must have one certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for DiagnosticMedicalSonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
* Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
* One year of experience as a DiagnosticMedicalSonographer
Physical Requirements:
* Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
* Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.

PURPOSE
The primary purpose of your job position as an Ultrasound Technologist in the Medical Imaging Department is to perform assigned duties in an effective manner, in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as directed by your supervisor to assure that a successful viable department is maintained at all times.
Working under the direction of the Director of Medical Imaging and the Medical Imaging Supervisors, performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment with ingenuity and initiative. Utilizes ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic scans in specified body areas. Must care for a patient population which includes adolescents and geriatrics; therefore, must be able to identify the special needs of each patient according to age and respond appropriately. Performs other job related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Verification of successful graduation from an AMA accredited radiology program and ARDMS certified or successful completion of an accredited ultrasound program and ARDMS eligible.
At least six months training and experience in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
Successful completion of at least one registry in the ultrasound spectrum within one year of hire if not already certified at time of hire.
General orientation and safety programs must be completed.
Technologist should be able to reach full productivity in 60 working days.
Has complete understanding of all common ultrasound procedures, sterile techniques and some knowledge of nursing skills.
Should possess basic knowledge of how an Imaging Department functions.
Should possess good knowledge of how an ultrasound department functions.
Working knowledge of medical terminology is required.
Has complete understanding of image processing and clerical procedures
Must be able to work with long term and acute care patients.
Must be able to function effectively and efficiently in emergencies.
Must be able to make quick decisions when necessary.
