The Ultrasound Technologist will perform a wide variety of routine and advanced imaging procedures, will provide support for other imaging technologists as needed, and help to facilitate smooth and efficient patient flow. The Ultrasound Technologist must be able to handle the movement, set-up, and operation of medical ultrasound equipment. The technologist will demonstrate flexibility by working other shifts and/or at other campuses as needed or required. The technologist must be able to troubleshoot basic maintenance, participate in QA, and resolve issues related to image processing and the image archiving system. Expectation to participate in ongoing education, safety, and technical advances within their scope of licensure. The technologist will adhere to, and maintain, the expected imaging competencies as outlined by management. Behavior and communication skills must align with the organization's mission, values, and culture.

Documents all applicable patient and procedure data consistently and correctly
Explains procedures adequately to patients to maximize patient comfort and cooperation
Appropriate monitoring during all phases of the procedure with special care taken to ensure patient emotional and physical well-being
Assist and/or chaperones radiologist when they are performing ultrasound exams
Assists radiologists during ultrasound biopsy procedures using appropriate sterile technique and universal precautions
Communicates patient information in a professional and courteous manner to patients and to referring physicians' offices as required.
Maintains the ultrasound equipment for cleanliness and ensures proper equipment maintenance and equipment safety
Maintains a good working relationship with Radiologists and other Center staff members

Here is what you will need:
Education: Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. For exceptions and training outside the US, educational requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and require HR approval.
Certificates: Active certification with ARDMS (SPI only is not eligible for hire) or ARRT(S). ARRT-BS is also acceptable if performing breast sonography only. Current compliance with CME requirements. Exceptions require HR approval.
Language Skills: Ability to effectively communicate to patients the procedures and educate women about the role of regular mammography in preventative breast health. Ability to read and write and comprehend medical terminology. Ability to effectively communicate information on a one-on-one and small group basis to doctors, patients, and other employees.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and sometimes involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: Knowledge of database software and RIS/PACS software.
Physical demands: Needs to be able to stand for long periods of time.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Displays a cooperative attitude and communicates effectively with Radiologists, other Medical Imaging areas and/or other hospital departments to expedite patient care.
Completes order entry and exam data entry functions in radiology information management system. Must be able to access and retrieve information from PACS system.

Promotes quality patient care through the performance of diagnostic/invasive ultrasound and peripheral vascular procedures utilizing appropriate techniques, sonography, both general and vascular, established protocols, physician direction and age specific guidelines. Maintains thorough knowledge of ultrasound equipment, biopsy instruments, supplies, and quality assurance guidelines and applies such knowledge in day-to-day performance of duties.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.
Follows the St. Joseph Medical Center Guidelines related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed to prevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI).
Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
Prepares patient for procedure by noting appropriate medical history, carefully screening patients and modifying protocols as necessary, noting the correct physician orders and maintaining rigid adherence to department safety standards.
Adjust personal schedule to accommodate department workload including on-call when required. Assists others in department as time and schedule permits.
Performs daily calibrations of equipment, cleans work area after each patient/shift, stock supplies as needed. Maintains all equipment in safe and satisfactory working order.
Provides Radiologist/Physician with assistance during complex or invasive procedures, including room and supply preparation.
Consistently able to respond to high volume situations in addition to routine schedule without sacrificing accuracy/quality. Completes PTO and payroll requests in a timely manner. Must meet modality specific departmental standards.
Displays a cooperative attitude and communicates effectively with Radiologists, other Medical Imaging areas and/or other hospital departments to expedite patient care.
Completes order entry and exam data entry functions in radiology information management system. Must be able to access and retrieve information from PACS system.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
WORK EXPERIENCE:
1 year scanning experience (requirement may be met through completion of clinical phase of ultrasound training)
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS certification
ARDMS or registry eligible and ARDMS within 2 years of hire date
EDUCATION & TRAINING:
Graduate from an approved/accredited School of Ultrasound Technology required.
SKILLS:
Sonography, both general and vascular
Technical, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills relevant to area to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, patients and families.
Ability to prioritize work with minimal supervision, to independently carry out the duties of the position.
Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Additional languages are preferred.
