Independently evaluates and documents a wide variety of complex sonographic (ultrasound) examinations, utilizing non-ionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves. Produces high quality imaging of required anatomy, for use by Provider in patient diagnosis. Performs specialized procedures requiring advanced knowledge/techniques. Utilizes multiple adjustments, settings and variable controls on complex instruments/equipment to produce and enhance images. May assist with orientation and training of new staff. Also assists with the evaluation of new equipment, procedures and protocols. Carries out emergency procedures within authorized limitations. Maintains required records and files. Performs routine maintenance on equipment.
Performs sonographic examinations/procedures.
Receives orders for designated ultrasound procedures. Reviews patient history for information which may be helpful in planning for procedures. Coordinates with Physician's office or nursing unit, the timing of preliminary medications or preps for procedures.
Enters patient's information into computer. Sets and adjusts equipment controls using knowledge of ultrasound physics and variable technical factors on complex electronic and computerized instruments. Takes into consideration type of exam, patient body habits and clinical history.
Independently performs scans of particular patient anatomy, as requested by the Physician, utilizing in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Recognizes a variety of pathological conditions and their manifestations of appearances under sonographic study. Exercises own judgment to extend or discontinue examination, as necessary.
Prepares and arranges patient in proper positions for examinations. Attaches and/or adjusts any required immobilization and supportive devices. Continually adjusts patient position, transducer and controls to regulate intensity/ amplitude of electronic beam, suppression of unwanted artificial images for radiologist.
Monitors video screen while scanning, noting normal or abnormal anatomy and recording same.
Makes precise measurements of different organs and fetal parts in order to calculate diagnostic information.
Performs variety of special procedures.
Sets up sterile trays with prescribed equipment following all regulations dealing with sterile techniques and related matters.
Performs preliminary scans.
Assists Physician in a variety of biopsies, amniocentesis, lesion localization, fetal manipulation, etc.
Repeats scan and records changes as a result of special procedures.
Provides communication.
Able to communicate clearly pertinent information to radiologist and other providers.

Job Summary:
Schedules patients and operates equipment to perform diagnostic medical sonograms in accordance with protocols in order to assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment. Follows established policies and procedures set by the department, hospital, state, ACR, TJC, and OSHA.
Key Accountabilities:
Performs ultrasound diagnostic procedures by selecting appropriate transducers and correct scanning sequences to produce an accurate image to assist the radiologist in the diagnosis.
Assesses physician's order for completeness by reviewing the requisition and patient's chart to ensure correct examination is performed the first time.
Establishes the testing schedule by prioritizing requests for procedures so that critically ill patients are treated and appropriate physician and staff levels are available.
Performs and documents quarterly quality assurance tests on equipment by following established professional protocols as required by TJC and to maintain integrity of the system.
Participates in invasive radiological procedures by assisting the radiologist in performing the procedure and producing images in order to provide therapeutic and diagnostic services.
Maintains the ultrasound equipment in good operating order. Clean and disinfect equipment and area after each use. Maintain work area in an orderly manner. Report any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdowns to supervisor.
Demonstrates yearly competencies, including knowledge and behaviors, to conduct examinations and meet the needs of patients with regard to the patient's age, condition or other special requirements.
Routinely prepare examination for interpretation by the radiologist to include correct identification and processing. Set up images in PACs system. Accurately inputs data in the RIS by tracking actual procedure in order to capture all charges and other relevant information for patient billing and to determine department resource allocation, billing and inventory.
Possess computer skills appropriate to meet departmental needs in preparation of reports and correspondence.
Works effectively as a team member within the department and with other units to provide quality service through communication, cooperation and collaboration. Provides clinical supervision and instruction to students by maintaining and understanding of policies, procedures, and the clinical competency process (in order to evaluate student growth and competence in performing radiographic procedures).

Perform Doppler studies, trans-vaginal studies and obstetric studies; and assist with cyst puncture or biopsy procedures.
* Participate in reviewing interpretation or various daily scans with Radiologist.
Review digital images as required, ensuring a high-quality image.
Ensure proficiency in use of the Radiology Information System and PACS.
Train others in the use of the Radiology Information System and PACS.
Assist in scheduling add on or emergent patients.
Interview patients in order to obtain information pertinent to the examination being performed.
Coordinate, collaborate, & communicate with other imaging modalities on providing efficient care of patients undergoing multiple modality exams.
Create and sustain a team environment communicate effectively and appropriately and work collaboratively.
Assist radiologist during interventional imaging procedures to ensure compliance of JCAHO and departmental policies and procedures and safety standards.
Report issues of non-compliance to these standards to the Team Leader immediately.
Assist in performance of quality control studies and gathering of quality improvement data as required.
Keep current with new positions, procedures, policies, and techniques as established by the licensing board and Cooley Dickinson Health Care.
Work flexible hours as department needs are assessed and be available for call as needed and required.
Assist with student training as necessary and provide input into student evaluations.
Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control and environmental standards.
Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.
Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.
Attend meetings as required.

Education
Associate's Degree Radiology required, or Other Certificate/Diploma Radiology required
Licenses and Credentials
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer [RDMS] - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) required
Experience
One (1) to three (3) years' experience as an Ultrasound Technician preferred
