Perform complex procedures at an advanced level that requires independent judgment and initiative in order to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing and treating patient illness; participate in teaching, evaluating, and advising fellows, residents, and medical students.
Schedule: Mon-Fri, (0830-1700 or 0930-1800) Call rotation/Holiday
Duties to include:
Sonographer:
Assists in the instruction of co-workers and students as required as well as in the review, updating and developing of new procedures as they become available.
Assists physicians in advanced sonographic procedures such as biopsies, amniocentesis, and similar activities.
Completes required continuing education as needed in order to maintain ARDMS certification.
Coordinates procedures with nursing units, referring offices, and within the Radiology department.
Interviews patients and records medical history relative to ultrasound examinations.
Identifies, accesses, and prepares medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
Maintains all equipment by safe, cautious and proper use, communicating any malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
Prepares patients and determines technical factors to be used in ultrasound examinations.
Provides for care and protection of patients during procedures, assuming care for the emotional, psychological and physical needs while adhering to The Joint Commission patient safety goals.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Senior Sonographer:
· Obtains and documents a comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
· In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
· Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
· Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
· Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
· Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
· Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
· Facilitates the patient's transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

* Performs quality ultrasound procedures by utilizing proper positioning skills and technical factors, as well as a knowledge of anatomical structures pertinent to the patient population of infants to geriatrics.
* Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations.

The Cardiovascular Lab at the Downtown Campus is seeking a full-time (100%) Sonographer to perform a variety of adult cardiac ultrasound procedures and assist in invasive procedures, participate in teaching, evaluating and/or advising students, residents and fellows in areas of expertise.

Duties to include:
Perform adult cardiac ultrasonography procedures and other complex invasive procedures to include: two-dimensional echo, M-mode, pulse wave and continuous wave Doppler, color flow Doppler, 3D, Strain, Exercise and Dobutamine Stress Echo studies.
Assist physicians with acquiring images during TEE studies. And perform contrast and saline bubble studies as needed.
Provide and maintain quality diagnostic adult echocardiographic exams.
Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
Maintain quality control in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
Assist cardiologist or other physicians with non-invasive, invasive or Doppler procedures.
Recognize basic equipment malfunction and coordinate with appropriate parties to find resolutions.
Provide information and instruction to patients, patient's family, or others regarding the nature of requested diagnostic procedures.
Maintain continuing education as specified by the ARDMS and IAC.
Contribute to preparation for IAC accreditation.
Instruct Cardiology, Anesthesiology fellows, medical residents and other students on scanning techniques and proper equipment operation.
Follow general policies and procedures in accordance with the regulations of UI Health Care, the College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, and UI Heart and Vascular Center.
Assist with policy development and review.
Function as a preceptor for orientation of new team members and students.
Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics.
Provide coverage for the UI Heart and Vascular Center at Iowa River Landing (IRL) as needed/assigned.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Must possess a valid driver's license and meet University's Fleet Safety Program.
Certification/Licensure Requirement:
Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography required within nine (9) months following the start of employment.
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required by start of employment.
