Duties to include:
Sonographer:
Assists in the instruction of co-workers and students as required as well as in the review, updating and developing of new procedures as they become available.
Assists physicians in advanced sonographic procedures such as biopsies, amniocentesis, and similar activities.
Completes required continuing education as needed in order to maintain ARDMS certification.
Coordinates procedures with nursing units, referring offices, and within the Radiology department.
Interviews patients and records medical history relative to ultrasound examinations.
Identifies, accesses, and prepares medications as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
Maintains all equipment by safe, cautious and proper use, communicating any malfunctions to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
Prepares patients and determines technical factors to be used in ultrasound examinations.
Provides for care and protection of patients during procedures, assuming care for the emotional, psychological and physical needs while adhering to The Joint Commission patient safety goals.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Senior Sonographer:
· Obtains and documents a comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
· In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
· Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
· Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
· Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
· Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
· Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
· Facilitates the patient's transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

The University of Iowa Health Care department of Radiology is seeking a Senior Sonographer under limited supervision; perform ultrasound procedures in multiple specialty areas, utilizing advanced technology/equipment, explain examination procedures to patients and monitor their well-being. Instruct students and staff on examination and equipment operations.
Duties Include:
* Perform complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
* Provide instruction to trainees, students and other medical staff on operation and safety precautions.

* Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient's care.
* Delivers high quality care while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required in the Diagnostic Cardiology Department in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.
* Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
* Utilizes critical thinking in making judgments and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of the patient.
* Demonstrates and maintains proficiency in the manual skills and techniques required in the safe performance of the following exams utilizing m-mode, real time, color flow mapping, PW /CW, ped off, and 3D imaging.

Development & Patient Education
* Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance Cardiac Sonographer practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
* 30 CMEs per 3 years to maintain certification plus any extra CMEs to maintain lab accreditation.
* Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient's and their families' age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
* Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
* Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
Department Support
* Must meet requirements for standby call which includes a 20-minute response time from primary residence to hospital.

Sonographer:

Responsible for performing 3D echo studies of complex pediatric cardiac abnormalities.

Participate in tele-echo services.
Determine equipment malfunctions and report to appropriate person.
Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
Senior Sonographer:
Obtains and documents a comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.

What you will do:
* Performs quality ultrasound procedures by utilizing proper positioning skills and technical factors, as well as a knowledge of anatomical structures pertinent to the patient population of infants to geriatrics.
