About the team and the role:
We're creating a new and highly strategic role in the Office of the CEO for a hands-on AI-native technologist who can shape, prototype, and help lead the next generation of AI-driven experiences at eBay. Reporting to the Chief of Staff to the CEO, you will serve as a strategic technical partner and prototyping force multiplier in the Office of the CEO. You'll explore and bring to life new ideas that leverage emerging AI technologies while working in close proximity to our CEO, helping shape and define what the future of eBay should look and feel like in an AI-powered world. This is a rare opportunity to partner directly with the CEO and senior leadership, acting as both a thought partner and a design technologist. Everything from turning high-level visions into tangible, intelligent prototypes that push the boundaries of what's possible in e-commerce.
What you will accomplish
Vision Partner to the CEO
Work directly with the CEO to define and evolve eBay's AI-forward product vision through whiteboard thinking, rapid prototyping, and technical demos.
Act as a real-time collaborator and technical translator-taking loosely defined, speculative, or exploratory ideas and giving them shape and substance.
Analyze continuously the frontier of emerging AI technologies (agents, multimodal models, orchestration layers, etc.) for strategic relevance to eBay's mission.
Rapid Prototyping & Applied AI Exploration
Build lightweight proof-of-concept tools, intelligent experiences, and interactive mockups that communicate ideas clearly and compellingly.
Translate experiments into influential narratives that inspire internal teams and inform roadmap strategy.
Cross-Team Advocacy & Strategic Leadership
Work across product, platform, and design teams to socialize future-facing ideas and technical possibilities.
Highlight key trends, tooling evolutions, and industry leanings to senior leadership.
Contribute to internal thought leadership and frameworks for how eBay approaches innovation in an AI-first world.
What you will bring:
A strong background (7+ years of experience) in engineering, technical product development, prototyping, or innovation roles-preferably in high-velocity environments or startups.
Demonstrated aptitude in navigating emerging technologies: including LLMs, prompt engineering, agentic workflows, orchestration frameworks (LangChain, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel), and generative UI platforms.
Proven ability to prototype rapidly across a range of mediums-code, design tools, visual mockups, interactive demos.
Experience working with or building MCP-compatible systems or plugins (e.g., Figma Dev Mode, VS Code extensions, API toolchains).
Comfort working with modern AI developer tools such as Cursor, Copilot, v0.dev, Claude, or OpenAI APIs.
Comfort navigating ambiguity and acting with high autonomy-able to move fluidly between strategic thinking and technical execution.
Strong communication and storytelling skills-capable of framing technical ideas to executive stakeholders with clarity.
Passion for working on transformative products and a strong point of view on how AI can reimagine commerce and human-computer interaction.
The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:
$197,200 - $263,300
Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

We are the Core Buyer engineering team that helps deliver engaging customer experiences for our buyers. We own View Item domain (Item Page, Transactions such Best Offers and Auctions) and help deliver innovations for our key initiatives such as eBay Live, and Focus Categories in Collectibles (Trading Cards, Comics, Toys), Fashion and Parts & Accessories. We drive billions of dollars in revenue via 100's of millions of page views delivered daily across the globe, across all devices & browsers. Performance, Accuracy, Real time systems (e.g. winning bid), Scalability and availability are paramount. These experiences have great financial and customer impact. We are looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the Transaction Organization. This individual will lead teams of highly motivated, collaborative, smart, driven engineers who can help us reshape the future of our e-commerce platform. You'll also work with a world class team of designers, product managers, business partners and analysts in a fun environment building world-class customer experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Vision & Strategy:
Define and drive the long-term technical vision, roadmap, and architecture for the engineering organization.
Align engineering strategy with overall business goals and product vision.
Evaluate and recommend new technologies, tools, and methodologies.
Ensure technical decisions support scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
Team Leadership & Management:
Lead, mentor, and grow multiple Engineering Managers and/or Team Leads.
Oversee the hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development of engineering staff (including managers and senior ICs).
Foster a high-performing, collaborative, innovative, and inclusive engineering culture.
Build and maintain team morale, engagement, and retention.
Delivery & Execution:
Oversee the planning, execution, and timely delivery of complex software projects across multiple teams.
Ensure teams adhere to best practices (coding standards, code reviews, testing, CI/CD).
Manage engineering budgets, resource allocation, and capacity planning.
Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to delivery velocity, quality, and system health
Process & Operational Excellence:
Establish, optimize, and standardize engineering processes (SDLC, Agile/Scrum/Kanban, release management, incident response).
Drive continuous improvement in engineering efficiency, productivity, and quality.
Implement and monitor metrics to measure team and organizational performance.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner closely with Product Management, Design, Data Science, Security, and IT/Operations to define requirements, prioritize work, and ensure successful product delivery.
Collaborate with senior leadership (Sr. Directors, other Directors, Executives) on strategic initiatives and company-wide goals.
Represent the engineering organization in cross-functional meetings and strategic discussions.
Technical Oversight & Quality:
Provide high-level technical guidance and oversight across projects.
Champion software quality, best practices, and operational reliability (e.g., SLOs, SLIs).
Ensure systems are designed for scalability, performance, and cost-efficiency.
Manage technical debt and advocate for necessary refactoring/infrastructure investments.
Resource Management:
Growing your team through coaching, mentoring
Forecast hiring needs and participate in recruitment strategy.
Job Requirements:
10+ years of software engineering experience, with 5+ years in direct people management and 3+ years managing other managers.
Master's degree in Computer Science, or Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience
Proven ability to lead, inspire, mentor, and grow large engineering teams and managers. Strong coaching skills.
Significant hands-on technical background (software development, architecture, systems design). Ability to understand complex technical challenges and trade-offs deeply, even if not coding daily.
Ability to set technical vision, translate business strategy into engineering execution, and make long-term architectural decisions.
Proven track record of shipping complex, high-quality software products at scale. Expertise in Agile methodologies.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences (including executives).
Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. Ability to build strong cross-functional partnerships.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to navigate ambiguity and make sound decisions under pressure.
Experience establishing processes, metrics, and driving continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the company's specific industry (e.g. E-commerce).
Experience scaling engineering organizations during rapid growth.
Experience managing distributed/remote teams.
The base pay range for this position is expected in the range below:
$233,200 - $311,300
Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave).
