Marcal Paper company history timeline
Nicholas Marcalus, an Italian immigrant from Sicily, founded what would become the Marcal Paper Mills in 1932.
The Marcal sign had been a bright red beacon of commerce in Elmwood Park to passing motorists on Route 80 since it was erected in 1946.
In the 1950’s, Marcal began to develop and implement groundbreaking technologies for recycling waste paper into pulp—making Marcal one of the earliest companies in the paper making industry to “Go Green.”
Marcal is owned by Atlas Holdings, LLC. Atlas was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut.
The plant’s former owner turned the sign off in 2009.
But, in January, 2014, Sound View Paper Company, which bought the plant, re-lit the refurbished sign with members of the Marcalus family present.
