Between July 2019 and June 2020, over 1,400 youth in elementary, middle, high school, and college attended SAYA programming across ten locations. We provided programs at nine schools throughout Queens and Brooklyn, and served youth in high school and college at our Elmhurst-based community center. During this period, our participants made strides in multiple areas, including developing leadership skills and gaining critical social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies that have shown to have a long-term positive impact. Our college students received mentorship and support to help them remain on track to graduate. In March 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we pivoted quickly and moved all of our programming online, with our team continuing to provide services through a number of digital platforms. Our elementary and middle school youth attended a range of virtual classes, including Art, World Exploration, Books to Movies, Improv, Creative Writing, and Homework Help. Our participants in high school and college attended virtual leadership and college access and success sessions tailored to their needs. We also increased our health and wellness efforts through individual check-ins and small group discussions. From December 2019 through June of 2020, SAYA took part in extensive efforts to increase the Census count in underrepresented neighborhoods throughout Queens. Prior to the pandemic we conducted in-person outreach and from March to June 2020, we continued this work using calls and texts. Additionally, in order to provide some relief from the economic hardships brought about by the pandemic, we applied for and received foundation funding to offer direct assistance to our youth and community members. A majority of the families we serve live paycheck to paycheck, and with many losing their jobs and income, direct grant assistance to families has been more vital than ever. While this was supplemental to our core programmatic offerings, it was a need of the moment and greatly beneficial to our community.Founded in 1997, South Asian Youth Action Inc (SAYA) is an established organization that loves to hire graduates from University of California - Davis, with 16.4% of its employees having attended University of California - Davis.
