South Carolina Federal Credit Union company history timeline

1936

31, 1936, at the Charleston Naval Shipyard (Charleston Navy Yard) in North Charleston, S.C., when fourteen Navy Shipyard workers each contributed $5 (for a total investment of $70) to create the Navy Yard Employees Credit Union.

1960

In 1960, the credit union changed its name to the Charleston Naval Shipyard (CNS) Federal Credit Union when its field of membership expanded to include Navy personnel who worked at the Navy Yard or were stationed/home-ported at the naval base.

1965

1965 First credit union in the state with our own facility at the Shipyard in North Charleston

In 1965, CNS became the first credit union in South Carolina to have its own facility.

1969

By 1969, CNS opened its first branch on the Naval Station.

1979

1979 Opened a 5-story headquarters and operations building at 2175 Credit Union Lane, North Charleston

1985

By the end of 1985, as CNS was nearing its 50th anniversary, it had assets of $221 million and served 103,844 members.

1994

The United States Navy closed the Charleston Naval Shipyard and naval base on April 1, 1994, but CNS' member base was robust enough that the credit union was able to withstand the loss.

In recognition of the changed environment and the credit union's broad membership, CNS changed its name on August 9, 1994, to South Carolina Federal Credit Union.

1994 Changed name to South Carolina Federal Credit Union to better represent service area

2000

2000 Established new Online Banking available to members free of charge

2004

In May 2004, South Carolina Federal reached a major financial landmark when assets hit $1 billion.

2004 Expanded Mount Pleasant area service to two financial centers

2007

2007 Launched financial services solutions for businesses

2007 Named one of the Best Places to Work in South Carolina for the first time

2009

2009 Opened new state-of-the-art operations center at 6265 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston

2011

2011 Expanded West Ashley area service with a new financial center

2012

2012 Beginning of the South Carolina Federal Foundation to streamline employee charitable giving

2015

2015 Launched Bank at Work, an onsite-banking program for participating employers

2016

2016 Celebrated the credit union's 80th Anniversary

2017

2017 Expansion to the Florence area began with two new financial centers

2018

2018 Expanded scholarship awards to $50,000 and included technical as well as traditional universities

2019

2019 Expanded credit union services to Spartanburg and Lexington

2021

2021 Celebrated the credit union's 85th Anniversary
