South Moon Under Company History Timeline

1968
What began as a small surf shack in Ocean City, Maryland in the summer of 1968 has since evolved into an upscale casual shopping destination.
1985
They've done it before, propelling a single store opened in 1985 in Harborplace into the national chain White House Black Market.
Smith is joined in the management team by his wife, Patricia Darrow Smith, chief creative officer, who founded White House Black Market in Baltimore in 1985.
1995
In 1995, five years after Michael Smith joined the retailer, the 33-store chain added the first Black Market store in Del Mar, Calif., selling garments in shades of black or gray.
2003
When the chain was sold to Chico's FAS for 90 million in 2003, it had grown to about 100 locations.
2016
The business was purchased by JPB Capital Partners in 2016 and has the previous owners of White House Black Market at its helm.
