In 1908, two local physicians, Drs.
In 1909, the now-incorporated Southampton Hospital Association bought the Hervey J. Topping house on the corner of Lewis Street and Meeting House Lane, complete with adjoining land for a future hospital building.
In 1911, the Southampton Hospital Association’s board of governors decided to build a new, fireproof hospital on the vacant land they had bought.
The original 1913 building was designed to be able to grow – and so it has, along with the community it serves.
The hospital, together with the Health Sciences schools, were founded in response to a report commissioned in 1963 by then New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller.
In 1980, Stony Brook University Hospital first opened its doors and became the region’s first academic medical center.
By 1980, after a year of mass recruitment of staff, the hospital employed 800 people.
The State University of New York purchased the property from Long Island University in 2006.
