Under the supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor, responsible for cleaning of offices and/or department areas including trash removal, high dusting, damp wiping, spot cleaning, mopping, vacuuming and bathroom cleaning. Assists in project work as assigned.
Job Description
Major Responsibilities:
1. Cleans assigned rooms and areas to insure a clean, safe and attractive environment.
2. Collects and disposes of trash and soiled linen daily
3. Stocks and distributes the clean linen.
4. Completes assigned schedule of duties making efficient and effective use of work time.
5. Projects a positive service attitude while on duty, responding to requests promptly and professionally.

Job Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: As a member of the Room Service team, the individual will be tasked to assist and deliver in a pleasant, friendly and timely manner patient specific high-quality food and exemplary service to patients, guests, and staff. This position requires working with and assisting other members of the Room Service team and Hospital staff to ensure that all patients receive prescribed foods, and guests and staff receive requested food following Federal, State, Local and hospital sanitation and safety procedures. As outlined in the Food Service Department's HAACP program.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Prepare aesthetically pleasing and 100% accurate trays within 45 minutes of patient ordering meal. 2. Participate in a restaurant-style cold/hot production in preparing the highest quality food product in accordance to departmental standards. This includes preparing select food items for meal service. 3. Deliver complete and accurate trays and food requests no later than 45 minutes of placing order and collecting trays no later than 1 hour after tray delivery while compiling with the departmental policies and procedures for tray delivery and pickup. Including verifying patient's menu selections to food items served on the tray and then immediately fixing mistakes. Delivery of food requests could be to an inpatient or outpatient area of the hospital. 4. Act upon patient meal service requests either by resolving the issue directly or alerting issues to the call center or supervisor. 5. To contact a supervisor or diet tech to substitute an item. 6. Deliver nourishments to patient bedside and floor nourishment areas. According to guidelines, inventory and order nursing station refrigerator supplies. 7. Record nursing station refrigerator temperatures to document food stored according to state-local-JCAHO regulations. 8. Bill and collect the cost of a guest or staff order in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Does not accept gratuities to perform assigned work duties. 9. Adhere to hospital and departmental hand hygiene policy and procedures. 10. Inventory and restock food and equipment, prior to meal service and assure adequate levels during meal service. 11. To operate equipment for meal service, including coffeemaker, toaster, microwave oven, mixer, blender and other necessary equipment for meal service. 12. Clean and sanitize equipment according to departmental policy. Perform cleaning duties as assigned. May need to assist with dish room tasks. 13. Assist in orientation and on-the-job training of new Room Service Team members and Dietetic Interns. 14. For administrative purposes, monitor, collect and/or record operation specific data. 15. Perform duties of other Room Service Team members when required and skill appropriate. 16. Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and procedures and other foodservice regulations at all time. 17. Participate in and monitors, according to preset criteria, sanitation and safety procedures - including HACCP program. 18. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
1. The position requires the ability to read, write and speak English, to follow and give oral and written instructions, to be able to communicate with patients, hospital personnel, and co-workers. This level is normally acquired through completion of a high school education. 2. Bilingual preferred. 3. High school education and 1-2 years of work experience preferably in food service or customer service. A basic supervisory course is strongly recommended. 4. Knowledge of therapeutic diet orders. 5. Knowledge of the food and restaurant regulations set by the federal, Massachusetts and Boston City Health Codes and Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospitals. 6. Must have computer skills and basic mathematics knowledge, including ability to work with money and cash registers.
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 1. Must be pleasant and friendly, flexible, hard-worker, and work well with others. 2. Must have good hand-eye coordination, good manual dexterity and a good attention span. 3. Work involves occupational risks commensurate with work hazards and physical requirements, i.e., wet slippery floors, chemical solutions, handling hot water and soup (180-190 degrees), frequent bending and tray handling. 5. Consequence of errors ranges from no harm to serious harm such as incorrect trays to patients, injured employees and broken equipment. 6. Work involves rotating shifts as early as 6:00 AM to as late as 11:30 PM, required to work weekends and holidays.

Requires physical ability to pull, bend, stoop, reach & climb ladders. Must be able to lift over 75 lbs. Performs extensive cleaning duties. Applies knowledge of cleaning equipment and methods. Uses power buffers, vacuums, and other related duties for checkouts including sanitizing beds, making beds, cleaning patient rooms, furniture and floors.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs duties of Housekeeper, including dry and wet mopping and cleaning in corridors, stairways, and other areas, burnishes floors using burnishers and vacuums carpeted areas.
2. Performs duties related to checkouts including sanitizing beds, making beds, cleaning patient room, furniture, and mopping floor. Moves beds, mattresses, and other furniture as required.
3. Performs isolation procedures in nurseries and formula rooms periodically and in isolation rooms after discharge of patient according to established procedures.
4. Cleans desks and furniture in office areas as assigned. Responsible for high dusting and cleaning such as light fixtures and vents and the hanging of cubicle curtains and drapes, blinds, etc., using climbing apparatus. Use wall washer or hand methods to perform ceiling and wall washing duties in established manner using climbing apparatus if necessary, Damp wipe signs, clocks, water fountains, and elevators.
5. Prepares rooms for meetings; arrange furniture in neat and orderly manner.
6. Empties and cleans urns and trash receptacles. Picks up trash and rubbish from assigned areas and disposes of it in established manner as required.
7. Performs floor refinishing duties including shower scrubbing and stripping of floors using proper chemicals and equipment, scraping by hand, rinsing with mop and bucket and applying finish in established manner. Cleans, extracts, and shampoos carpets using proper chemicals and correct procedures.

Job Summary
Performs routine housekeeping activities to maintain a clean, safe and habitable environment according to departmental standards. Cleans Patient Rooms after Discharge.
* Picks up and discards trash and soiled linens. Damp-wipes waste baskets and linen hampers. Performs high dusting activities to ensure that vents, bed lights, televisions, high ledges, and other high areas are free from dirt and dust.
* Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms. Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaning equipment to ensure that the mirror, sink, toilet, and shower are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Restocks toilet tissue, paper towels, and soap, as needed. Replaces shower curtains as needed. Spot cleans any soiled areas as needed. Places sanitary strips across toilet seat.
* Damp wipes telephones, the on-call button cords, bed-side tables, and over-the-bed tables, chairs, bed rails, head and foot boards, and all other furniture in the room daily. Damp wipes doorknobs, light switches, window sills, pictures, and other horizontal surfaces daily. Spot cleans walls as needed. May clean windows. Strips, damp wipes, and remakes beds upon patient discharge. May cycle-clean rooms (including cleaning ceiling, walls, bathroom tiles, etc.) as assigned by Supervisor. May use mess kits on hazardous spills.
* Dry mop patient room floor, including bathroom floor. Prepares cleaning solution with Hospital Approved Disinfectant. Wet mops patient room floor, including bathroom floor daily.
* In administrative offices and at Nursing Stations, damp wipes office furniture, computer terminals, telephones, files cabinets, etc. Dry mops floors and/or vacuums carpets daily.
* Moves furniture as needed to dust and clean floors and carpets. May strip and refinish floors on a periodic basis. May buff and shine floors daily. Shampoos and spot cleans carpets as assigned by Supervisor. Sweeps, wet mops, dry mops, and buffs floors in hallways and stairways as assigned by Supervisor.
* Organizes the supplies in housekeeping closets daily.
* Damp wipes walls periodically. Wet mops floors daily. Scrubs sink daily.
* In cooperation with the Group Leaders and Supervisors, ensures that equipment and supplies are always available and in proper working condition. Uses equipment and supplies as outlined by manufacturer guidelines. Picks up E.S.D. cart at the start of each shift. Uses safety glasses, gloves, and other personal protective equipment as needed. Cleans equipment after each use. Restocks supplies on the cart daily. Replaces vacuum bags and filters as needed. Returns soiled mops to the E.V.S. supply room for cleaning.
* Demonstrates appropriate work, personal, and safety habits in the performance of duties. Uses safety glasses, gloves and other personal protective equipment as needed. Changes gloves as appropriate and washes hands after each use. Recognizes hazardous situations and responds appropriately (ie. places carts out of the way of traffic, uses mess kits appropriately). Changes cleaning water every three rooms. Cleans and restocks carts for the next shift. Takes responsibility for cleaning and organizing housekeeping closets.
* Is courteous and helpful to patients, visitors, and other personnel. Greets patients upon entering their rooms. Continually acts as "customer service agent" on behalf of the Hospital. Recognizes when the patient is in need of clinical assistance and responds by calling for a direct health care worker. Leaves behind "Welcome to Newton-Wellesley Hospital" cards after cleaning each room.
* May be required to assist in moving and discarding heavy office furniture.
