Responsibilities
Position reports to the Manager or designee. Perform various duties including but not limited to: provide assistance to surgical team during the intra-operative phase, provide aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped and functional surgical environment. Responsible for OR preparation, instrument supply and assembly, maintenance of sterile fields, hands off instruments and initiation of counts throughout procedures. Perform Surgical Technologist duties including on-call duties as need or required.
Qualifications
* Equal to completion of 4 years of high school plus additional specialized courses or training is required.
* Graduation from an approved Surgical Technology Program is required.
* Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by a nationally recognized surgical technologist certifying body accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the Association of Surgical Technologist within 12 months of graduation from program or within 6 months of hire if greater than 12 months from graduation.
* Certification in Basic Life Support is required.
* One (1) year of related work experience is preferred.
* Must be fully vaccinated against seasonal Influenza and the COVID 19 virus or to be exempt from the requirement for medical or personal reasons by signing a statement certifying you are choosing to be exempt from vaccination once hired
Compensation: Pay rate will be determined based on level of experience.

To provide primary assistance to the Surgeon during a surgical procedure. BLS and ACLS competent.

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program; successful completion of appropriate pretest/exams, classroom orientation and clinical orientation is required.
Well organized and possess high degree of Manual Dexterity.
3 years' experience in a hospital-based surgical service.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, customer service and communication skills required OR equivalent combination of the above

Summary
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for planning, preparing, and maintaining surgical instrumentation and the surgical field peri-operatively. The Surgical Technologist also performs various related activities post-operatively in relation to room and instrument decontamination.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Operating Room and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
Provide emotional support to patients when appropriate.
* Perform surgical skin prep using principles of aseptic technique.
* Provide appropriate barriers when draping sterile field.
* Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures by anticipating needs and preparing equipment in advance.
* Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments and update surgical trays as necessary.
* Perform ongoing assessment of operative procedure.
* Determine deviations from the norm and provide for the indicated supplies and equipment.
* Under the direction of the surgeon, retract tissue, hold tissue, suction body fluids, and sponge and irrigate without harm to body tissue.
* Under the direction of the surgeon, cauterize bleeders if it is essential to the progress of the case.
* Communicate unusual occurrences at the sterile field to the circulating nurse.
* Safely assist in the moving and positioning of patients.
* Perform surgical counts in a safe and efficient manner.
* Ensure that appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are assembled for procedures.
* Ensure that room sets are thorough.
* Research case requirements when indicated.
* Perform surgical hand scrub per CDHC policy.
* Use principles of aseptic technique in all aspects of job, including opening sterile supplies.
* Reprocess instruments when needed.
* Assist with room clean up, mindful of minimizing turnover time.
* Perform autoclaving functions.
* Collaborate with other OR and Childbirth team members, surgeons, and management team to solve problems and improve care delivery.
* Communicate problems and related information to the appropriate person.
* Assume role of preceptor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse to ensure a systematic and effective orientation program.
* Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.
* Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
* The individual holds an associate degree in Surgical Technology or is a graduate of an equivalent, accredited Surgical Technologist Program and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential or
* Has successfully completed an accredited school of surgical technology but has not, as of the date of hire, obtained the certified technologist certification, provided that such certification shall be obtained within 12 months of the graduation date.
* Has been employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility on July 1, 2013.
* Has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service (MA Senate Bill 2058, December 2012).
* BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire. AHA & ARC accepted.
* Professional Development Certification preferred.
* Surgical Technologist Certification required for SEIU Grade 13.
* One year of Operating Room experience is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Adheres to scope of practice as a Surgical Technologist
* Maintains a safe operating room environment as prescribed by Hospital policy, AORN and AST Standards of Care, and regulatory requirements.
* Adheres to isolation protocols established by Infection Prevention and standard precautions for blood/body fluid policies utilizing OSHA Standards.
* Maintains a working understanding of, and adherence to, aseptic technique
* Maintains integrity of sterile field
* Ensures a safe environment for the perioperative patient and staff
* Applies knowledge of proper patient positioning
* Applies knowledge of prepping technique
* Prepares and understands the specific use of all supplies and equipment used for surgical procedures.

* Demonstrates proper procedure for decontamination, cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of special equipment and instruments
* Must be able to function in CSR to cover needs. Ensures proper preparation of instruments and equipment.

* Demonstrates proper specimen collection, identification, and transportation techniques
* Assists in the preparation and labeling of medications on the sterile field in accordance with regulatory requirements
* Adheres to department procedure for the prevention of retained surgical items through the proper completion of surgical counts. Communicates results of surgical counts to surgeon
* Assists in room turnover and in-between case cleaning.
* Assists in maintaining adequate stock of supplies in the surgical suites, clean supply room, and sterile supply room

* Performs duties as a preceptor for new hires to surgical technologist position
* Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative to career development. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor.

* Prepare the operating room for surgical procedures.
* Set up sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment required for the surgery.
* Transport patients to the operating room, help with positioning on the surgical table, and ensure their safety and comfort during the procedure.
* Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to the surgical team during procedures.
* Follow proper sterilization techniques to ensure the cleanliness and sterility of surgical instruments and supplies.
* Maintain accurate and complete documentation of surgical procedures, including counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments used.
* Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other members of the surgical team.
* Assist in preparing the surgical site by applying sterile drapes and solutions.
* Secure and manage surgical drains and catheters as directed by the surgeon.

We are currently hiring for our Boston main campus (243 Charles Street) - shifts to include full-time/36hrs weekly - rotating 12hr shifts, 7:00am-7:30pm/8:00am-8:30pm (hours may vary based on department need).
Mass. Eye and Ear in Boston is a Harvard teaching hospital dedicated to eye (ophthalmology) and ear, nose, throat, head and neck (ENT) care and research. Under the general direction of the Nurse Director in the eye/ophthalmology department, and the guidance of the Circulating registered nurse, the Certified Surgical Technologist is a member of the surgical team responsible for providing intraoperative care to the surgical patient. The CST is responsible for instrumental care and safety of the patients. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for ensuring effective communication between members of the surgical team.

* Under direction of the Chief Department of Cardiovascular Surgery or designee, perform duties in being responsible for evaluation, care and management of patients with vascular disease in an outpatient clinic setting or inpatient ward setting under the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts governing Physician Assistant practice.
* Evaluate and care for vascular patients in the Out-Patient Department.
* Provide clinical coverage 24/7 utilizing in house on call scheduling.

Qualifications

* Graduate of an A.M.A.-approved Physician Assistant program is required.
