C&S was awarded its first international route on May 24, 1946, to the Caribbean.
Southern Air was founded in 1946 as a residential heating company with just 15 employees.

On June 10, 1949, Southern Airways' first scheduled flight takes to the skies.
On May 1, 1953, the Civil Aeronautics Board formally transferred the routes of Chicago and Southern to Delta.
After the merger, the airline operated as Delta-C&S for a couple of years, before continuing as "Delta" in Summer 1955.
1967, Southern takes delivery of its first DC9 jets.
In 1978, its last year of operation as an independent entity, Southern Airways serves 50 cities in 17 states and the Cayman Islands with 4,500 employees and major hubs in Atlanta and Memphis.
On 1 October, 1980, Republic Airlines pays $38.5 million to complete the acquisition of Hughes Airwest.
On 23 January, 1986, Northwest announces an agreement with Republic Airlines for Northwest to acquire Republic for $884 million.
