I. Job Summary
In tandem with a seasoned WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer, after receiving their Commercial Driving Permit, the Driver Apprentice will complete the required training to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle providing service to customers in their respective Line of Business (LOB). The Driver Apprentice will continue in this role until they complete all training requirements.
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned. While in training, the following skills will be taught and the trainee must be able to demonstrate proficiency prior to moving to the next driver level:
After obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit, partners with a WM Driver and/or WM Driver Trainer to train on the proper way to operate a commercial refuse / recycling vehicle:
Operates vehicle in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) and DOT (Department of Transportation) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws.
Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and documents checks utilizing the standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report).
Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager.
Works closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.
Notifies Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injures, or property damage.
Notifies Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
Communicates customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager.
Completely dumps all receptacles and leaves the customer's location clean and free of debris.
Follows route assignments as directed and completes end of day documentation and check out process.
Performs all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assisting other drivers as directed to meet customer needs.
Performs as an on route Helper while obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit and completing the training to be a WM Driver:
Works in accordance with WM Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA (Occupational and Safety Health Act) requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws.
Immediately reports all unsafe situations or service related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch.
Attends and participates in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Operations Manager.
Manually or mechanically load and empty residential and/or commercial containers into truck.
Containers maybe staged curbside, dockside, carryout, or require pullout to complete service.
Operates hoisting device to lift and empty bins or containers into truck hopper.
Assists driver with all backing maneuvers while on route.
Notifies Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injures, or property damage.
Notifies Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards.
Communicates customer requests to Dispatch or Operations Manager

* Performing inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of transformers (45 KVA to 130 MVA), circuit breakers, and related equipment (including dry type and oil-filled).
* Maintenance, testing, reconditioning, and repair of circuit breakers (low voltage 480V, medium voltage up to 15kV).
* Working with SF6-filled equipment and gas-insulated switchgear.
* Testing and inspecting low and medium voltage cable installations.

Position Summary:

Education and/or Experience
This is an entry position. Associate is required to successfully complete the Charleston Water System's
Operator Apprentice Program, which may include: formal classroom training with the Technical College, classroom and correspondence courses at the work site, on-the-job training with a qualified trainer, independent learning, work assignments and skills demonstration testing. All training completions have effective deadlines which must be met. Failure to qualify on the training requirements may result in termination. All applicants must possess the following:

Position Summary:
This position is an entry level position. The associate is required to participate in the Charleston Water System Training Program and must pass specific sessions by defined dates after date of hire. Under limited supervision, performs installations, renewal and repairs to all sizes of water services. Performs maintenance, installations and repairs to fire hydrants, valves and different types and sizes of water mains. Performs bench and field test and repairs of water meters. Essential Functions:
Removes and/or replaces soil, water, materials and/or debris from work sites.
Loads and unloads equipment and materials from vehicles at work sites.
Operates jackhammers, compactors, pumps, and boring equipment.
Disassembles and removes damaged or worn pipes.
Assembles and installs new pipes.
Disassembles/assembles pipe and meter appurtenances in the installation and/or repair of meters, meter boxes/vaults and service lines.
Make repairs to meters up to 36” in size.
Field test meters 3” to 10”.

Performs PM inspections, testing, data collection, and general maintenance and repair of valves, fire hydrants, water mains, blow offs and sampling stations.
Operation of distribution and transmission valves to ensure proper position and operation.
Prepares reports.
Locate valves and water mains in the field using electronic detection equipment.
Follows up on deficiencies found to ensure repairs are made promptly and correctly.
Help to solve customer complaints and problems as well as those reported by local fire departments.
Responds to customer water quality concerns.
Responsible for maintaining equipment used i.e.; tapping machines, pumps, compactor, saws Backhoe or Bobcat.
Measures and cuts pipe according to specifications.
Make various taps 3/4” up to 10” onto water mains up to 36” in size using tapping machine.
Ability to complete work tickets, inventory supply requests and accident reports.
Drives utility vehicles that require a CDL.
Operates backhoes and bobcats.
Draws as-built diagrams for new installation or repairs
Complies with and maintains all safety procedures according to CWS and OSHA standards at all job sites and while traveling to and from job sites.
May be required to work during emergency conditions.

This position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by learning a working knowledge of computer system, tools, equipment, and material. The position will be learning the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. In addition to normal work, position must be available to be on-call with a more experienced person as required and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, to perform work required during planned outages or emergency situations (24/7). The position must learn to perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all Company safety rules and procedures.
Responsibilities
Assist with construction and maintenance of the distribution system
Demonstrate a basic understanding of overhead and underground insulate and isolate principles
Familiar with and understand the electrical distribution system by completing the Line and Service Training modules
Know, adhere to, and promote personal and work group safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries
Develop positive and respectful working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
Maintain accurate records and files
Support the company's goals and represent the company positively and professionally
Basic/Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent
Valid class A commercial driver's license (CDL)
Experienced climber
Experience working on secondary voltage
Minimum of two (2) years of distribution line and service work: familiar with and understand the electrical distribution system and have troubleshooting skills and ability to assess level or repair required
Know, adhere to, and demonstrate leadership in promoting personal and work group safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries.

Completion of Phase 2 of the Duke Energy Distribution Technical Training Program
Working experience with secondary voltage
Experience with single phase primary voltage
Working experience installing underground secondary cable and accessories for services (temporary and permanent)
Experience with application of secondary I&I on overhead and underground applications 0-300 volts
Experience installing anchors by hand
Experience installing and removing single phase meter
Experience with meter identification
Experience with transformer inspection and interpretation
Experience with application of secondary protective insulating equipment
Digger derrick and load securement experience
Experience working with customers
Working knowledge of a work management system
Demonstrated proficiency in constructing, maintaining, and operating the distribution system, and to ensure public safety and customer satisfaction
