The Bariatric Surgery Dietitian provides nutrition guidance and counseling to Bariatric surgery patients through development, implementation and monitoring of dietary recommendations pertaining to weight loss surgery.
Responsibilities
Assesses the bariatric surgery patient by screening the medical record, completing a comprehensive assessment based on medical record data and interviewing the patient. Assesses the patient considering religious, cultural and ethnic preferences.
Recommends appropriate nutrition intervention to the bariatric surgery patient pre and post operatively based on all relevant data, including but not limited to, protein parameters, iron level, vitamin level and calcium level.
Serves as a nutrition educator by providing education, lectures and programs to hospital staff and patients. Educates patient based on their cultural, religious and ethnic preferences. Individualizes patient education materials based on patient's age and comprehension levels. Provides appropriate resources and education according to identified needs. Documents education provided, including evidence of family teaching (as applicable) and measurable understanding of principles discussed. Participates in patient group teaching as needed. Evaluates and develops nutrition education materials.
Documents desired outcomes specific to the individual patient problem(s), diagnosis(es), learning capabilities/limitations and progress towards established goals.
Maintains CPEU's as required by the American Nutrition Association in order to maintain registration.
Assists with development of department standards, guidelines, policies and procedures. Adheres to all regulatory standards.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Active, current, and unencumbered Licensure as a Registered Dietitian in the State California
Three (3) years' experience working with Bariatric Surgery patients
Bachelor's degree in food and nutrition or related field
AHA Basic Life Support
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English
Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment
Computer Proficiency and Literacy
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the organization
Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) years working with Bariatric Surgery patients in an outpatient setting (clinic/Dr.'s office)
Bilingual skills to communicate effectively with patients and families
