On September 11, 1893, New Haven State Normal School, a two-year teacher training school, was established.
Southern Connecticut State University was founded in 1893 with three instructors and 84 students.
The alumni association was founded in 1925 to keep track of and unite SCSU Owl alums as they continue the University’s history of success.
By 1937, Southern had grown into a four-year college with the power to grant bachelor's degrees.
By 1937 the school was able to grant bachelor's degrees, and thus renamed New Haven State Teacher's College.
A new campus was opened in 1953.
Graduate degrees were offered starting in 1954, a year after the school moved to its current campus on Crescent St
In 1957 New Haven was one of the first Eastern cities to undertake wholesale urban renewal of its decaying downtown area.
In 1959 the school added a liberal arts curriculum and changed its name to Southern Connecticut State College.
In 1959, six years after the institution had moved to its present location on Crescent Street, state legislation expanded Southern's offerings to include liberal arts programs leading to bachelor's degrees in the arts and sciences.
In March 1983 the school was renamed Southern Connecticut State University and made part of the Connecticut State University System.
The school’s current name was adopted in 1983.
