In March 1948, our roots began as The Technical Institute.
Since its founding in 1948, the University has earned an exceptional academic reputation.
In 1949, The Technical Institute became the Southern Technical Institute and was recognized as a college-level school by the United States Department of Education.
In 1961, Hoyt McClure was named acting director and led the movement to build eight new buildings on 120 acres (49 ha) of land.
The Southern Technical Institute became accredited as a four-year college in 1970 and was one of the first colleges in the nation to offer the Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree.
By the summer of 1980, The Southern Technical Institute achieved independence within the USG by ending ties with Georgia Tech.
The Office of Distance Learning (ODL) provides administrative, marketing, and technical support for distance learning activities at Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). SPSU has offered distance learning options in a variety of formats since 1995.
Doctor Cheshier retired as president of the university in June 1997.
The M.S. in quality assurance has been offered at a distance since 1997 and was the first degree in quality assurance to be offered in the country as a distance program.
In 2005, Georgia Highlands College established a satellite campus hosted on the SPSU campus.
In 2006–07, undergraduate tuition is $189 per credit hour; graduate tuition is $227 per credit hour.
The amount lost equated to nearly 15% of the merger-based savings of 2013.
And on July 1, 2015 the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology was established as a college under KSU in memorial of the former SPSU.
