Southern Virginia University is a liberal arts college affiliated with
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though this affiliation
is unofficial, the LDS ideology permeates university policy and student
life. As a result, more than 95% of Southern Virginia students are
Mormons. SVU's academics are rooted in the liberal arts. The university
intentionally offers fewer majors so that students can gain a broad and
interdisciplinary educational foundation. About a dozen majors are
available, as well as pre-law, pre-medicine and teacher certification
programs. Discussion-based education is a key component of Southern Virginia
University's academics. The average class size is about 15 students,
allowing for plenty of interaction and mutual support. The admissions process at Southern Virginia is fairly standard.
