Southern Virginia University is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though this affiliation is unofficial, the LDS ideology permeates university policy and student life. As a result, more than 95% of Southern Virginia students are Mormons. SVU's academics are rooted in the liberal arts. The university intentionally offers fewer majors so that students can gain a broad and interdisciplinary educational foundation. About a dozen majors are available, as well as pre-law, pre-medicine and teacher certification programs. Discussion-based education is a key component of Southern Virginia University's academics.
