Southern Wesleyan University company history timeline

1906

Classes at the new school began on October 15, 1906, with students from first grade through college.

On the crisp fall morning of October 15, 1906, the institute opened its doors with only three instructors.

The university was founded in 1906 by what is now the Wesleyan Church.

Southern Wesleyan University was originally established in 1906 as the Wesleyan Methodist Bible Institute whose mission was to develop Christian character in its students while giving thorough intellectual training.

1920

In 1920, Marion College was officially established as a liberal arts college in Marion, Indiana.

1928

Beginning in 1928, the college operated as a two-year junior college, with a four-year theological program.

1945

In 1945, the Holiness Bible Institute opened under the auspices of the Reformed Baptist Church in Woodstock, New Brunswick, moving two years later to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

1959

In 1959, Wesleyan Methodist College was transformed from a junior college/academy into a four-year liberal arts institution and named Central Wesleyan College.

1968

In 1968, after the merger of the Wesleyan Methodist and Pilgrim Holiness Churches, Bartlesville Wesleyan College was established.

1970

Central Wesleyan's first collegiate contest came against Toccoa Falls, Ga. on December 1, 1970.

1972

1986

In 1986, Central Wesleyan expanded its programs of study to serve the needs of working adults, establishing the Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP) program, which is now known as SWU Online.

1994

On October 28, 1994, Central Wesleyan College changed its name to Southern Wesleyan University.

2002

Master's programs in Business Administration and Education began in 2002.

2005

The inaugural class was inducted in October 2005.

Through the direction of the Warrior Club, The Southern Wesleyan University Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 2005.

2007

The Warriors defeated Central Christian 77-73 on March 10, 2007 to become Southern Wesleyan University's first national championship team.

In 2007, the SWU Women's basketball team was awarded the NCCAA National Championship.

In the fall of 2007, Chris Williams was named the second ever Director of Athletics for Southern Wesleyan.

2009

It is the largest private educational institution in the state of Indiana as well as the largest school in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and just recently (2009) opened a seminary.

2011

In 2011, the school was renamed Kingswood University.

2013

Men's soccer and individual men's golf won NCCAA National Championships in 2013.

SWU began offering fully online courses, available nationwide, in 2013.

A new logo was introduced in 2013, but the Warrior name was retained.

2015

Southern Wesleyan's men's soccer team returned to the NCCAA National Championship tournament under the guidance of Camilo Rodriguez in the fall of 2015.

2017

Southern Wesleyan announces the addition of Women's Lacrosse with first game to be played during the 2017-18 year

2018

In 2018, the university initiated its first doctoral program, an Ed.D. in curriculum and assessment.

2019

Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament - second year program 2019

2020

Southern Wesleyan claimed their first Conference Carolinas Championship Title in the spring of 2020 as the Men's Basketball team, coached by Nick Pasqua, defeated Belmont Abbey.

At the end of the 2020 season, Southern Wesleyan was awarded The Body, Mind & Soul Doctor Alan Patterson Cup.

2021

Haley McLaughlin, Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the year, 2021
