Southfield School company history timeline

1938

In 1938, the first justice of the peace was William H. Edwards.

1949

By 1949, the department moved to a new station at Ten Mile and Evergreen Roads.

However the establishment of what has grown into Southfields Academy started much later with the establishment of Southfields School in 1949.

1950

In the 1950's, a group of Southfield Township residents, including Emanuel Christensen, Clarence Durbin, Hugh Dohany, Eugene Swem and Fred Leonhard, formed the 'Save Our Southfield Committee' and lent their own cash to the group's treasury.

1953

By a margin of 85 votes, Lathrup Village voted to incorporate on May 12, 1953 and adopted a charter in December of 1953.

The Southfield Police Department began in 1953 with Phillip La Vigne as its first chief.

1958

Prior to the City's incorporation in April of 1958, Southfield's court system operated under the guidelines established under the State Constitution.

John O'Brien was the first associate judge elected in 1958.

In 1958, she sold 166 acres to the City of Southfield for a Civic Center for $4,500 an acre, a total of $747,000.

1960

On February 1, 1960, Southfield opened its own library in the former Brooks School building at 11 Mile and Lahser with a collection of 10,000 books.

1964

In 1964, the Southfield Civic Center opened, featuring a new Library, Parks and Recreation Building, Police Headquarters and City Hall.

However the establishment of what has grown into Southfields Academy started much later with the establishment of Southfields School in 1949. It started as a Secondary Modern and became a Comprehensive School in 1964, when it was organised in upper and lower schools on two separate sites in Garratt Lane and Merton Road.

1965

At the beginning, the Municipal Court was located on Southfield Road near Ten Mile Road and then moved into City Hall in 1965.

1966

However re-building began in 1966 to accommodate the whole school on the Merton Road site.

1968

Revenue for 1968 was approximately $150,000 annually and expenses were approximately $50,000 annually.

1969

He held that position until January of 1969, when the Municipal Court was replaced by the District Court.

1970

The Civic Center Arena, with its swimming pool and indoor ice skating facilities, was opened in 1970.

1971

In 1971, the District Court hired Margaret Clixby as its first administrator.

In 1971, Southfield opened the 'roundhouse' Public Services Building, a structure 326 feet in diameter capable of accommodating 88 City vehicles and 200 tons of salt.

1972

In 1972, a citizen's group formed to put the question of increasing the millage for police and fire protection on the ballot.

1974

Other names are on record in the Southfield Library transcripts of Township records transcribed by Vicki Goldbaum in 1974.

1975

A driving range was constructed at Beech Woods in 1975 and a complete golf course opened the following year.

1979

The department moved to the Municipal Complex, where a new Public Safety Building housing a jail, administrative offices and police headquarters was opened in August of 1979.

1982

In 1982, the Library began utilizing a computerized library card system.

However, by providing a caring and disciplined educational environment the school quickly grew in popularity and by the time our original Headmaster Mr Brantingham retired and was succeeded by Mr Wood in 1982 the school had been oversubscribed for several years.

1993

With the advent of the National Curriculum the London Borough of Ealing reviewed the organisation of its schools and in 1993 Southfield became a Primary School admitting children aged three to eleven.

2005

In 2005 the school's place as a hub for the local community was assured with the official opening of the Aspire Centre sports hall and climbing wall by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne the Princess Royal.

2009

In 2009 Ms Valin became Principal and Ms Golinska was appointed Headteacher in charge of the day to day running of the school and the delivery of its core purpose.

2012

After discussion and consultation, the Governing Body decided to apply for Academy status which was achieved in August 2012.

In 2012 Southfields Community College became Southfields Academy to reflect this the Academy gained a new logo and motto and at the request of the students a new uniform, returning to the traditional blazer, shirt and tie.
