Job Description
The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a Systems Administrator with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) experience. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in cloud-native technologies within Microsoft Azure, container orchestration, and Linux system administration. The candidate will be responsible for managing, scaling, and optimizing AKS clusters, maintaining the underlying Linux systems, and ensuring our cloud infrastructure is secure, reliable, and high performing. This is an on-site, non-remote position for our North Logan, UT location.
Key Responsibilities:
Designs, deploys, and manages Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) clusters for production and development environments
Collaborates with development teams to containerize applications and manage workloads in AKS and Kubernetes environments
Integrates AKS clusters with Azure services (e.g., Azure Monitor, Azure DevOps, Azure Networking) for observability, CI/CD, and governance
Administers, configures, and maintains enterprise Linux systems
Implements Linux system hardening, patch management, user and permission administration, and ensures compliance with DoD and organizational security standards
Automates system provisioning and configuration using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Terraform
Monitors and troubleshoots system and cluster performance
Implements infrastructure as code (IaC) and automation for scalability and repeatability
Leads and assists in installation, configuration, and documentation of systems and components

Works collaboratively with IT and engineering teams to improve system reliability, scalability, and efficiency

Required Qualifications:

2+ years of experience managing Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or Kubernetes clusters in production environments
Demonstrated experience administering Linux systems (RHEL, Ubuntu) in enterprise or mission-critical environments
Strong Linux security skills, including system hardening, patch management, and configuration management
Experience with containerization tools such as Docker or Podman
Experience managing Kubernetes and/or Azure identity and access management (IAM)
Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell).
Experience with automated deployment and infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Terraform)

Minimum Qualifications:
8+ years of IT systems administration experience supporting Windows and Linux environments

Preferred Qualifications
3-5+ years of hands-on experience administering and optimizing AWS services across compute, storage, networking, and security
Experience configuring and troubleshooting AWS networking components, including VPCs, subnets, route tables, Transit Gateways, NAT Gateways, load balancers, VPNs, and firewalls
Proficiency in AWS security best practices, including IAM role design, policy management, SSO integration, and enforcing least-privilege using STS and role-based access controls
Experience implementing and maintaining Amazon EKS clusters, including performance tuning and resource allocation for resilient, secure container operations
Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools in AWS environments (CloudWatch, Grafana, Prometheus)
Working knowledge of infrastructure as code using CloudFormation and/or Terraform
Experience using patching and OS lifecycle management in AWS, including use of AWS Systems Manager (SSM) for patching and automation

Knowledge of DoD security requirements and operating within classified or regulated environments

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking an AWS Cloud Architect/Engineer to design and support implementation of secure systems and associated applications, services, and components. The selected candidate will follow SDL's rigorous Information Systems Engineering procedure, which utilizes industry best practices and standards (TOGAF, IEEE/ISO/IEC 42010 & 42020), to produce information systems designs. They will identify and document customer-specific system requirements, industry best practices, and any security or compliance requirements and then design an information system to meet those requirements. A successful candidate should understand how to design and implement an information system from proposal to operation. This role is primarily an architecture and information systems engineering position, not day-to-day cloud operations or application development. This position is on-site, non-remote at our North Logan, UT location.
Key Responsibilities:
Follows all applicable SDL engineering processes
Responsible for designing complex, highly available information systems and supporting their implementation
Provides clear, detailed guidance on selecting and implementing the most efficient solutions to meet business needs
Gathers and synthesizes system requirements from internal and external customers defining operational requirements including integration with other systems or components
Works with cross-functional teams to implement requirements into complete, workable system solutions that account for technical, schedule, and cost constraints; also evaluates and recommends viable alternatives
Acts as a Multi-Disciplined Engineer serving as a subject matter expert primarily in cloud systems, with working proficiency across compute, storage, directory services, hypervisors, and networking
Demonstrates a strong understanding of network architecture and connectivity concepts relevant to cloud-based systems
Assists in enhancing current engineering processes
Serves as a peer reviewer for complex information systems designs
Responsible for engineering documentation of assigned systems and solutions
Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services
Conducts research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards
Provides technical expertise on projects and proposal efforts

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a working knowledge of networking, systems, cyber, and/or cloud technologies
Proven experience architecting and engineering AWS-based information systems in regulated or mission environments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to perform engineering trade-offs between customer requirements, schedule deadlines, program funding, and engineering best practices
Ability to work effectively in a team environment on collaborative efforts involving both internal and external team members
Experience managing or contributing to project budgets and schedules
Must have active Top Secret clearance
