AUTOMATION & CONTROLS ENGINEER (COMPONENTS) SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy booster (collectively referred to as Starship) represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship will be the world's most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, with the ability to carry in excess of 100 metric tons to Earth orbit. We are looking for an automation & controls engineer to help SpaceX develop and build a great variety of automated solutions for Starship Production. This role will be hands-on in designing and activating hardware and software systems for the machines that make up the Starship production and machining line. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits * Lay out new industrial electrical control panels that are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliant and create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics * Architect, write, and debug PLC code, emphasizing generating organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable code for manufacturing applications * Develop robot systems to aid in the automated manufacturing of various vehicle sub-components * Implement (ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant) control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other manufacturing equipment * Generate aesthetically simple HMI screens for complex machinery while providing sufficient feedback for troubleshooting * Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, pneumatic and fluid plumbing * Select and size electrical and electromechanical components such as servo motors and controllers * Deploy automated processes and equipment into production * Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in an engineering, physics, or computer science discipline * 5+ years experience in the design and commissioning of automation and controls systems for industrial applications PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * Process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems experience * Experience in a variety of robotic weld applications (Kuka, ABB & Fanuc) * Robot and PLC simulation experience * Experience working with National Instruments software and hardware * Electrical schematic CAD experience using EPlan * C#, .NET, Python and/or SQL experience * PLC programming experience, preferably Siemens TIA Portal & Beckhoff TwinCat 3 * HMI and SCADA programming experience * Field bus networks, serial communication and Ethernet communication * Hands-on experience building and commissioning high quality electrical control panels and electro-mechanical systems * Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 79, UL508A codes * Exposure to a wide variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (vision systems, dispense systems, temperature controllers, laser distance sensors, Nut-Runners, etc.) * Excellent communication skills both written and verbal * Experience in fast-paced iterative design and manufacturing environments * Experience solving complex problems with little to no supervision on schedule as an individual or as a member of an integrated team. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support critical milestones COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Pay range: Automation & Controls Engineer/Senior: $130,000.00 - $180,000.00/per year Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER (FACILITIES) As a member of the HQ construction team, you will design, build, and activate some of the world's most technically advanced manufacturing facilities. As an electrical engineer on the MEP team, you will design and build high power electrical systems that directly contribute to new construction projects. You will be able to operate with autonomy to solve diverse and complex problems, excel at managing multiple projects at a time and work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You will work with other construction engineers, architects, trade partners and internal customers to support these goals and have the opportunity to drive real global impact, ultimately leading to making life multiplanetary. The position is based in Hawthorne, CA. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines to provide detailed electrical design and specification for the installation of the following equipment and systems: * Electrical power distribution systems. * Switch-gear and motor control centers. * Exterior and interior lighting. * Ground support system controls and ladder logic. * Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units. * Standby and emergency generators. * Automatic transfer switches. * Power monitoring hardware and software. * Data/phone distribution and wiring. * Building and site grounding systems. * Fire alarm systems and lightning protection systems. * Provide electrical engineering support to facility technicians to troubleshoot existing electrical equipment and controllers. * Provide engineering support for the design, operation, and troubleshooting of all the facility's electrical components and systems, including: * Load flow analysis of electrical power distribution systems. * Electrical equipment evaluation. * Building and facility equipment grounding. * Power monitoring hardware and software. * Ensure that all equipment interfaces properly with other mechanical and electrical systems, including compatibility with facility power budgets. * Coordinate all electrical installations and maintenance activities with local electrical utilities personnel. * Ensure all electrical designs and installations conform to applicable codes and regulations. * Provide code review and analysis utilizing NFPA 70E, NFPA 70 NEC, NFPA 497, NFPA 101, Vol 5 & 6 AFSPCMAN 91-710, and IBC. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other engineering discipline. * 3+ years of professional experience working on electrical projects, power distribution systems, switchgear, UPS's, and/or generators. PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: * 5+ years of years of professional experience in a similar role. * Professional Engineering (PE) license. * Ability to read and understand power and control schematics. * Ability to read and understand highly technical equipment operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals. * Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and industrial pumps. * Experience with controls in MODBUS communication. * Experience with medium voltage distribution. * Experience with control panel design and production. * Working knowledge of power coordination and arc flash. * Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently. * High level of self-motivation, with the ability to work under minimal supervision. * Good organizational skills. * Ability to prioritize and schedule workload. * Strong written and verbal communication skills. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * This is not a remote or hybrid position and will require relocation if not already local to the Hawthorne, CA area. * Position occasionally requires the ability to work extended hours and weekends when needed. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Pay range: Electrical Engineer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00/per year Electrical Engineer/Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00/per year Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX.
