Job Summary
The Emergency Department Technician is responsible for receiving patients, gathering patient registration information, ordering tests, generating specimen labels, and performing phlebotomy on all patient populations.
This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Emergency Department and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required and
Other Certificate/Diploma Phlebotomy required

Licenses and Credentials
Paramedic License [Massachusetts] required
Basic Life Support [BLS] Certification required
Experience
Previous ED technician experience preferred
Experience working with mentally ill and dually diagnosed populations preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* CPI training required within six (6) months of hire.
* Ability to perform routine patient care activities under the direction of licensed nursing personnel requiring technical or on the job training such as EKG completion, phlebotomy, wound care, and vital signs required.
* These skills are typically acquired through the completion of a certified nursing assistant and/or medical assistant program.
* Competency in nursing assistant skills and phlebotomy skills required by the end of the orientation period or position will be forfeited.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and handle high-stress crisis situations in a timely and effective manner required.
* Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required. Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and telephone skills required.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, take initiative, and make independent decisions and maintain organized working conditions (even in stressful situations) required.

Assists the Registered Nurse with ADLs, such as partial bed baths, assistance with shower and sit baths, as appropriate for patient; filling water pitchers and serving nourishments; and recording intake and output.
Assists with collection of specimens including phlebotomy.
Documents vital signs and I&O on appropriate forms and EMR.
Disposes of trash and linen on an ongoing basis.
Maintains knowledge of and complies with infectious diseases policy and procedures, such as appropriately caring for patients on precautions, using protective measures as deemed appropriate, and separating and disposing of infectious materials appropriately.

1) centralized hospital orientation educational offerings: practice specific courses (e.g., basic dysrhythmia workshop, Trach care, Inter-professional Team Training), newly licensed nurse hands-on skills training, and enrollment into the Nora McDonough Nurse Residency Program and,
2) ED unit-based orientation: didactic classes and skills training (low- and high-fidelity simulation) conducted by the experienced ED Education team (curriculum developed from the Emergency Nurse's Association core competency curriculum), ED-specific courses (ACLS/ BLS certification, De-escalation training, Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum) and precepted hours with an experienced ED nurse preceptor.
The ED unit-based orientation is done in 2 phases to ensure that the fundamentals of your nursing practice are developed and supported safely before you are progressed into the critical care components of training. For staff nurses who have less than 2 years of emergency acute care experience (other than new graduates), a plan will be designed based on an assessment of the nurse's prior experience, critical thinking, and technical and interpersonal skills. Incumbents can expect up to a full year of combined orientation and training in preparation to care for emergency acute patients. *BLS, ACLS and TNCC education and certification will be provided during orientation for candidate who do not hold the certifications.
