Spec's company history timeline

1971

In 1971, the Jackson’s daughter, Lindy, and her husband, John Rydman, joined the business after graduating from college.

1974

With the introduction of wines in 1974, John Rydman created even more excitement about Spec’s with the breadth of wine selection and pricing offered in Houston.

1979

Since 1979, Le Specs has become renowned globally for it's iconic and innovative sunglass collections at an affordable price.

1980

One year after her return, Leiff was promoted to supervisor in charge of nine stores; by 1980, at age 31, she had risen to the post of president, quickly scaling the ranks of a business that was flourishing in the southern Florida area.

1985

The 1985 initial public offering occurred when the company was coming off recording $16.6 million in sales from its 16 stores.

1987

The most radical change over the 855 was the incorporation of the electronic control module (ECM). Detroit Diesel rolled out the first commercial electronic diesel engine in 1987 with its ground breaking Series 60 Engine and Cummins followed suit.

1993

At the time, there were only 59 stores composing the chain, but plans announced midway through 1993 once again pointed the company toward developing into a 100-unit chain.

In the summer of 1993, Leiff announced that Spec's Music was undertaking a $23-million, capital-expenditure program.

1994

With the advent of the first EPA Tier emissions regulations in 1994 the future of diesel engines was going to be electronic diagnostics.

These new additions were showcased in a prototype, 7,000-square-foot store that opened in Tallahassee, Florida, in early 1994.

1995

In 1995, third generation family, Lisa Rydman, joins the Spec’s team.

However, a little more than a year later--in mid-1995--the company made a bold move in another direction by turning to the superstore format to help maintain its leading position in Florida, which was being threatened by increasing competition.

1996

By the beginning of 1996, changes were needed, and those changes were to be effected by a new arrival to Spec's Music's headquarters.

1997

In 1997 Cummins introduced the N14 Celect Plus which further fine-tuned the ECM to control many more custom parameters of the fuel system. In addition of an ECM the N14 was designed for emissions purposes to consume much less oil.

By 1997, the number of Spec's Music stores had been whittled down to 47, and more store closures were imminent as Gibbons strove to diversify within the entertainment and leisure industry.

2001

Overall, the biggest structural difference between the 855 and N14 is the air-to-air cooling system changes but both engines are very similar. The N-14 was produced until 2001 and saw many changes over its 10+ year run for Cummins.
