Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues. Collaborates and communicates with instructional staff, other school personnel, foster parents, administrators, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school's mission. Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, behavior logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements. Responsible for preventing client abuse by adhering to all policies and procedures, attending periodic training, reporting suspicious and inappropriate behavior, and following mandatory abuse reporting requirements. Reports incidents (e.g. problematic behavior, abusive behavior, runaway risk) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state and federal laws. May include providing direct supervision of youth and children as necessary. Other Duties Include: Maintain a high standard of role model behavior for youth. Participate in training and development activities as required. Report any acts, incidents or conditions that reflect the possibility of inappropriate youth-to-youth or staff-to-youth relationships. Report any use of physical force and all unusual incidents per guidelines. Perform other duties as assigned or needed. Requirements: Education Bachelor's Degree in Education and/or Special Education. Experience: Minimum of 3 years' prior relevant teaching experience working with children with developmental and intellectual and/or physical disabilities preferred; any equivalent experience. Skills: Must be able to successfully complete initial and ongoing training & certification in Universal Precautions, First Aid, CPR & Restraint Training. The Special Education Teacher is required to maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Physical Demands: Ability to sit at a desk for a long period of time and tolerate extended periods of data entry. Must be free of communicable diseases as required by the state and to the extent that knowledge is attainable under the law. Other: Must maintain an appropriate and valid state driver's license.
