Job Description
Uncommon Special Education teachers are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. Special Education teachers advocate for students and believe that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. Special Education teachers offer academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations.
Responsibilities
1. Instruction
You'll modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
You'll collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that offer appropriate accommodations and modifications.
You'll create an inclusive and safe environment where students feel empowered to become self-guided learners.
2. Special Education Specific Responsibilities
You'll collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments and ensure compliance with Individualized Education Plans.
You will gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings.
You will teach pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction and implement strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners in your classroom.
3. School Culture
You'll build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
You'll partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
You'll engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
You'll participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
You'll partner with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.
Qualifications

Required Experience:
A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins. You do not need to be certified to be hired; however, if hired you will need to pass state teacher certification tests to meet the MA state requirements.
Teachers are qualified to teach independently if the teacher holds one of the following qualifications for the appropriate grade and severity level:
MA special education license
Special education license or equivalent issued by another state or
Documented completion of approved undergraduate or graduate program in special education
If a teacher does not hold any of the qualifications above, the teacher may only deliver specialized instruction if:
The teacher is under the
direct
supervision and oversight* of an educator who holds an initial or professional special education license (Moderate Disabilities License), or is otherwise qualified as per above;
And
Must pass the following MTELs within the first year of employment:
Communications and Literacy Skills test, and,
MTEL subject area tests (English or Mathematics)
SEI endorsement

Compensation for this role is between $57,000 to $89,000.
Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $57,000.

The Special Education Coordinator is passionate about supporting the students who are at-risk for academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges so that they can succeed in the school's rigorous academic program. The Special Education Coordinator holds primary responsibility for providing academic, emotional, and physical services for students who require additional support to thrive within the school's core academic program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure that all students receive the educational services that they need to succeed;
Identify incoming students' special education needs as indicated by family questionnaire responses;
Review the results of intake assessments of new students to identify special education needs;
Schedule and providing pull-out services as needed;
Schedule, coordinate, and chair team and pre-referral meetings;
Conduct academic testing as part of the evaluation process;
Coordinate and conducting classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed;
Ensure that all regular education teachers know and understand all classroom accommodations required by IEPs;
Deliver one-on-one, small group, and whole class instruction as appropriate;
Maintain student records regarding special education issues and preparing reports for regulatory agencies;
Ensure compliance with all City, State, and Federal special education law and regulations;
Contribute to the design of curriculum materials;
Design and administer rigorous, standards-based assessments and using assessment data to refine curriculum and instruction;
Help to create a culture of order, structure, humanity, and academic rigor in the classroom and school as a whole; and
Collaborate with other teachers, other school staff, and administrators to ensure that all our students climb the mountain to high school and college.
Qualifications

Collaborate with the Principal/Head of school to:

ensure that students with disabilities participate in the general education environment with their non-disabled peers per the IEP
provide and/or arrange professional development and support for special education teachers and related service providers.
Coordinate and support the continuum of settings and an array of services for students with disabilities and students placed-at-risk
Serve as liaison to and coordinate the work of outside agencies providing services to students in those schools without a Student Development Coordinator

Collaborate with the Principal/Head of school in providing FAPE, LRE, and specialized instruction and services for students with disabilities, and differentiated instruction for all students

Provide expertise and assistance regarding the implementation of a Code of Conduct for students with disabilities
Support the maintenance and improvement of regulatory compliance
Process referrals for and chair all original, re-evaluation, and emergency placement team meetings; develop Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) for these students, including transition for students with disabilities beginning at age 14; secure parent signatures for these plans; chair annual review meetings until such time as the Boston School Committee has satisfied its bargaining obligations to have Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers chair the annual review meetings, and provide teachers and other service providers as appropriate with copies of IEPs at the beginning of each year and when changes occur thereafter
Consult with and support special education teachers and related service providers in their responsibilities to chair annual reviews and develop IEPs for these students when the Boston School Committee has satisfied its bargaining obligations to have Special Education Teachers and Related Service Providers chair the annual review meetings.

JOB GOAL/PURPOSE: To ensure that students with an IEP receive services in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. Provides support through MTSS to benefit all students.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and/or Director of Special Education
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Addresses the needs of diverse learners in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations.
2. Administers assessments, interprets evaluations, and writes reports.
3. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrates findings with other disciplines, provides recommendations and develops Individual Education Programs (IEPs) based on TEAM recommendations.
4. Collaborates with TEAM members to implement specially designed instruction to support educational and social-emotional behavioral needs in accordance with student's IEP.
5. Collaborates with the TEAM to determine and implement appropriate accommodations for classroom assessments and standardized examinations for special education students.
6. Completes all assigned paperwork for the special education process as required by state and federal regulations.
7. Provides targeted and evidence-based interventions.
8. Fulfills all case management responsibilities associated with the IEP.
9. Maintains accurate, complete and confidential student records.
10. Involvement at the community, system, building and student levels for school-wide initiatives such as social-emotional learning, Universal Design, assistive technology and program development.
11. Serves as a resource to develop effective teaching strategies for all students.
12. Responsible for annual reviews, written progress notes, parent/teacher conferences and proctoring state assessments.
13. Uses evidence-based research and continuing education to address MA frameworks and to meet licensure requirements.
14. Performs other responsibilities as deemed appropriate and assigned by a supervisor and/or designee.
EXPERIENCE:
Safety Care trained, preferred
1-2 years as a special educator
Training in reading instruction preferred ie, Orton-Gillingham
Training in restorative practices preferred
ELL and SEL training preferred

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Direct assignment to the building principal for routine administrative matters and to the Supervisor of Special Needs for the delivery of services identified in the IEP, and related program issues.

* Work with school staff to promote maximum integration of children with special needs.
* To participate actively in the evaluation process and TEAM meetings.
* To chair all perfunctory Review and Annual Review Meetings of students.
* To administer educational assessments for Annual Reviews and Re-evaluations.
* To assist in the development of appropriate educational plans as directed by the Evaluation TEAM Chairperson.
* Insure the orderly and timely implementation of those educational plans developed.
* To confer with the parents of special needs students, as needed.
* To assist the Evaluation Chairperson and other assigned staff in maintenance or required records.
* To submit to the Principal, the Director, the Supervisor of Special Education schedules and reports as required, including semi-annual Pupil Reports and Annual Review.
* To collaborate with other Special Educators and Regular Education Teachers on cases requiring joint participation in implementing educational plans.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
In accordance with the Fall River Educators' Association contract. Continued employment is contingent on work performance, program need, and funding.
