ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Manages the daily operations of the classroom which involves ensuring a safe and supportive environment of students and staff. Manages student behaviors within the classroom or other instructional settings.
* Assesses student academic abilities and needs and identifies related goals and objectives. Works with parents and other program staff which comprise a student's treatment team to develop a comprehensive IEP for each student. Develops lesson plans and activities which will teach and reinforce desired behaviors and targeted academic principles. Participates in treatment team meetings to discuss client needs, issues, progress, IEP modifications, etc.
* Evaluates the effectiveness of provided academic lessons and teaching approaches and techniques and incorporates changes as necessary to ensure maximum benefit to the student. Reviews and evaluates student's work.
* Documents and reports on student progress with regard to academic goals; and consults with other members of the student treatment teams to share information, observations, etc regarding student progress and behaviors.
* Leads the work of academic support staff assigned to the class room. Oversees their implementation of identified lesson plans, and consults with support staff regarding observations and suggestions for student goals. Ensures appropriate documentation for progress reports, and daily data sheets. Provides guidance and assistance as needed.
* Identifies and obtains necessary classroom supplies and equipment.
* Implements crisis intervention strategies as needed. Documents and reports all incidents in accordance with policies and procedures.
* Responds to inquiries from agencies, parents and/or guardians regarding student progress, goals, lessons, etc.
* Prepares a variety of program related reports and documentation such as consequence records, incident reports, educational and behavioral logs, quarterly progress reports, etc.
* Attends conferences and workshops to keep abreast of professional trends, developments and techniques.
* Ensures the classroom is maintained, clean and safe
* Participates in taking students into the community for special events or learning experiences.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Requires a bachelor's or masters in specialeducation or a related field.
* Requires valid Virginia teaching license or eligibility for conditional license.
* Prefer 1 year of experience teaching students with specialeducational needs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
* Requires State Teaching Certificate in SpecialEducation
* Behavior management program(s) (such as MANDT certification and UKERU certification)
* A valid driver's license.

General Description
Plans, delivers, and evaluates instruction based upon specific standards and objectives established by Nottoway County Public Schools. Develops, evaluates, and modifies instructional materials and resources so that instructional needs of students are met. Establishes and maintains a classroom environment that is supportive of students' intellectual, physical, emotional, and social well-being so that each student may experience success. Supervises students in a variety of settings. Monitors use of materials, equipment, and resources for maintenance and care. Engages in two-way communication regularly with parents and students regarding the student's progress. Participates in on-going professional development for continued growth in the profession. Maintains accurate records. Meets deadlines. Follows required policies and procedures.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have, or be eligible for, a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education.
Qualifications
Requires knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction as well as general knowledge of academic curriculum for assigned classes. Ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students' learning. Ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing. Skilled in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning.

Essential Job Functions
Plans and delivers appropriate curriculum content to students in a manner that, as much as possible, meets the interests and abilities of students assigned to the class.
Regularly incorporates reading and writing into lessons and activities.
Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated on a regular and consistent basis.
Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
Uses the curriculum adopted by NCPS to plan, teach, and evaluate (formally and informally) daily instructional activities.
Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
Maintains order within the classroom setting in accordance with NCPS guidelines regarding student behavior management.
Supervises students in non-classroom time (before school, after school, student activities, fire drills).
Collaborates with other faculty in planning and delivering instruction to students.
Establishes relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community members which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
Communicates regularly with parents and makes self-available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, NCPS policy and administrative regulation.
Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations and guidelines related to public schools.
Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; to hear, understand speech, and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skilled at developing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships with students, parents, and colleagues; excellent oral and written communication. Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and an education reflective of cultural awareness and responsiveness; ability to integrate technology into curriculum and instruction; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents and community members.
Requirements
Minimum of 18 years of age.
