1994

1994: There were 61 million pagers in use, largely because pagers are much more affordable than any other mobile communication method.

1995

1995: Motorola introduced the world’s first two-way pager, the Tango two-way personal messaging pager.

1996

1996: Research In Motion (now known as BlackBerry) introduced the Inter@active Pager, which allowed users to receive and send messages thanks to its full keyboard and graphical display.

1999

In 1999, Metrocall strengthens its focus on internet-based wireless services by forming Metrocall.net to offer bundled service solutions to the small office/home office (SOHO) market and to small and midsized enterprises.

2000

But he didn’t hold any resentment that he never profited from his inventions. “They have “permeated our society,” he said in 2000, a year before his death, “and I’m delighted.”

2001

2001: Motorola and Glenayre, the dominant paging equipment manufacturers, began to exit the paging space.

2004

2004: USA Mobility was formed from the merger of Arch Wireless, Inc. and Metrocall Holdings, Inc., combining the two leading independent paging and wireless messaging companies in the United States.

2007

2007: USA Mobility acquired full ownership of GTES, which provided rights to the Glenayre IP and software source code associated with the GL3000 and other Glenayre product lines.

2008

Amcom acquires another important company in 2008, bringing on board Commtech Wireless, a leading provider of technology that connects critical data sources, such as nurse call system alarms and patient monitors, to the right people via their preferred communication devices.

2011

2011: USA Mobility acquired Amcom Software, creating a company at the forefront of critical communications.

2012

2012: USA Mobility took action on behalf of customers to ensure service continuity to replace the aging Glenayre products.

2014

In 2014, two powerful communication companies, USA Mobility and Amcom Software, merged into one cohesive business—and Spok was born.

2015

2015: Spok introduced the T5, an alphanumeric pager with an encrypted paging option.

2021

2021: Spok releases its ReadyCall® Text waiting room pager to help increase patient engagement by enabling waiting room and on-site communication for patients or visitors.

2021: Spok expands the next generation of paging with the launch of its GenA™ pager.
