Spokane International Airport company history timeline
Located near Rutter and Fancher and along the banks of the Spokane River, Felts Field was originally known as Ed Hoisington Field when one-thousand acres were first leased from the city by the Northwest Aircraft Company in 1919.
The Washington Air National Guard set up at the airstrip in 1924, which was the region’s first Air National Guard unit.
That building, along with others on the airport, is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It is named after James Buell Felts, a Washington Air National Guard pilot who was killed in a crash in 1927.
Mamer and nine others were killed in a commercial plane wreck and in 1939 a clock tower memorial was built in Lt.
Airports established in 1940
Built in 1942 as the Spokane Air Depot, Fairchild Air Force Base is four miles (7 km) to the west.
Geiger was closed in late 1945 and turned over to War Assets Administration (WAA), then transferred to Spokane County and developed into a commercial airport.
Although Felts Field lost most of its traffic in 1949, it never failed to continue running as an airport.
Congress established the PFC program in 1990 to allow airports to fund development of facilities to increase capacity, improve safety and security, and reduce noise.
In 2007, bonds were sold to construct the consolidated rental car facility.
The airport processed nearly 3.3 million passengers and 76,569 United States air cargo tons in 2021.
