Sport played their first match on 22 June 1905, drawing 2–2 against a team called English Eleven, a team formed by employees working for English companies in Recife.
Sport Club do Recife was the first football club in Pernambuco , being opened in 1905 by Guilherme de Aquino Fonseca and, therefore, the pioneer in the state since there was still no football association.
It happened on April 29, 1906 in a game held in the Derby field, 1×0 over the Western Telegraph, a team of employees of this English company installed in the capital of Pernambuco, the red black goal was scored by striker Fellows.
Sport’s first victory came in 1906 . In this match Leão defeated the Western Telegraph team by the score of 1-0, with the goal of an attacker named Fellows.

In 1923 an almost perfect campaign: 12 games with 11 wins and only 1 loss.
In 1924 another good campaign: 13 games with 11 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat.
The pioneer was the Uruguayan Carlos Viola, Champion Pernambucano in 1928 . In addition to training, he acted as a player.
In December 1941 , Sport began its season in the South / Southeast of the country, which for many, journalists and even fans was a suicide tour.

A year earlier, Sport beat America in the grand final of the Pernambuco Championship of 1948 .

Sport Recife celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1955 by winning their 15th state title.
With goalkeeper Dirceu in place of Manga, and with defender Sinval in Bria’s spot, this team started in December 1961 the journey of another two-time champion, winning in the final the nautical of the novice Ênio Andrade by 3×2 in Ilha do Retiro.
The good campaign in the 1962 Brazil Cup, a semifinalist being eliminated only by Santos de Pelé, earned Sport an invitation to what would be the first international tournament in its history: the International Soccer League, known in Brazil as the New York Tournament.

1988 – Champion from Pernambuco
By winning the title, they qualified for the 1988 Copa Libertadores, but failed to qualify for the next stages of the competition, finishing in 15th place overall.
Led by Givanildo Oliveira, Sport won the 1st edition of the Copa do Nordeste in 1994, beating hosts CRB on penalties after a 0–0 draw in normal time.
1996 – The beginning of Penta
1997 – Two -time champion
1998 – Three – time champion
2000 – Five- time champion , two-time champion and finalist
In the Brazilian Soccer Championship 2001 , ending in last place, being demoted to Serie B .
The 2006 Pernambucano Championship could not have a more exciting outcome.
2006 – Centenary Champion and back to Serie A
In 2006, after five years in Série B (the Brazilian second division), Sport Club do Recife finished second.
2007 – Two – time champion
Sport became the first club from Northeastern Brazil to win the Copa do Brasil, beating Corinthians on away goals in the 2008 final.
Sport begins the year of overwhelming 2009, becoming undefeated four-time champion Pernambucano, with a respectable campaign.
2009 – Four-time undefeated champion , beautiful campaign in the Libertadores and fall to Serie B
2010 – Five-time Pernambucano champion
2011 – Finalist of the Pernambuco Championship and back to Serie A
After a poor first half, O Leão da Ilha returned to Série A in 2011.
First Place Finishes: 0 since 2014
2014 was a great year for Sport: they returned to Serie A, won their third Copa do Nordeste, 40th Campeonato Pernambucano, and finished 11th in the league, which ensured them a place in the Copa Sudamericana.
