Hernando County Public School System company history timeline

1817

According to records, the town’s first established learning center was called Willeford’s School, founded in 1817 near Rutherford Creek by mathematician and astronomer William Willeford.

1907

In 1907 Allegheny City was annexed into the City of Pittsburgh which resulted in a shift of boundaries and wards.

1908

Also with the annexation into the City of Pittsburgh, there was a substantial two-story addition added to the school in 1908, doubling its size.

1921

The first public education facility was Westview School, an eight grade institution that operated during the late 1800's and early 1900's. It was succeeded in 1921 by Spring Hill School (SHS), which opened where the present-day Tennessee Children’s Home is located.

1936

The architect for these 1936 renovations was Marion Steen, the Pittsburgh School Board's staff architect and Assistant Superintendent of Buildings at the time.

1937

In 1937, a new Spring Hill School was built on School Street at Duplex Road, providing an education for children throughout the community in grades 1-12.

1966

In 1966, SHS added kindergarten classes to its curriculum.

1983

In 1983, students in grades K-5 at SHS transferred to the current Spring Hill Elementary School on Main Street.

1991

The last changes occurred in 1991 when the architecture firms of Akers, Erwin, Thompson, and Gasparella made extensive renovations to the interior, modernizing it.

2018

The building was nominated in 2018 to become a City Historic Landmark by Preservation Pittsburgh.
