Springdale Village company history timeline

1806

The City of Springdale was first founded in 1806 as the Town of Springfield.

1811

The first store in Shittim Plains (a Biblical name) was in existence by 1811 and is listed as owned by a trader.

1839

In 1839, the town was officially incorporated as a village under that name.

1854

A school was built in 1854 and still remains the site of the present Springdale Elementary School.

1864

The mill began in 1864 with the construction of an 85-foot dam across the Quinapoxet River.

1865

In 1865 the Springdale Mill, built of wood and containing two sets of machinery, opened for business under the ownership of a Mr.

1868

The train made its first trip from Stamford to New Canaan on July 4, 1868.

1882

In 1882, the Mass Central Railroad opened between Oakdale and Jefferson, providing a more efficient means of transporting the goods manufactured by the mill.

1892

In 1892 James Dorr bought the mill, renovated it to manufacture satinets (fabric made from silk and wool), and renamed it the Glen Woolen Mills.

1905

With the building of the Wachusett Reservoir, the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board (a predecessor of the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) bought the mill on November 24, 1905, to safeguard the water quality of the reservoir.

1959

During later years however, the original incorporation was lost and the village was then re-incorporated in 1959 under the name of Springdale.

2005

Robertson, who in 2005 bought a one-bedroom condominium, with a balcony and a laundry room, for $227,000.

2009

And in 2009, Hope Street was rezoned, from about Mulberry Street to Clearview Avenue, to encourage its redevelopment.
