Springfield Jewish Community Center company history timeline

1902

1902 Congregation Sons of Israel is established.

1912

1912 The Daughters of Zion Home for the Aged (later Jewish Geriatric Services) is established.

1913

1913 Congregation Beth El is established.

1915

In 1915, community leaders organized the Springfield Hebrew School on Tenth Street to provide free education for Jewish youths.

1918

1918 Greenfield Hebrew Congregation (later Temple Israel) is established.

1920

A wave of xenophobia following the war led to "Red Raids" targeting Jewish fraternal organizations meeting at Liberty Hall on North Street in January 1920.

1923

1923 Congregation Ahavath Sholom is established.

1951

The Hebrew Institute relocated to 557 Chestnut Street in 1951, but enrollment declined with the migration of Jews to the Forest Park area.

1969

1969 Jewish Community of Amherst is established.

1974

1974 Beis Medrash is established.

1991

1991 Harold Grinspoon Foundation is established.

1996

1996 Lander-Grinspoon Academy is established.

1998

1998 Beit Ahavah is established.
