1849

The Valley’s first recorded history since the Native Americans roamed the landscape on their seasonal hunts for food, begins with the Gold Rush in 1849.

1870

California gold miners were actually the first people to compete on skis. in the By 1870, skiers were racing down the slopes at 100 miles per hour.

1942

Although the resort was small, their lift received the title of the longest double chairlift in the world. It all began in 1942, when two ski adventurists, Wayne Paulsen and Alex Cushing, began building Squaw Valley Ski Resort.

1945

Poulsen meets Alexander Cushing, an East Coast businessman, while on a ski trip at Alta in 1945, and the two formed a partnership.The partnership dissolved prior to the resort opening, with Cushing remaining with the company and serving as the Chairman for the next five decades.

1948

In 1948, Governor Earl Warren created the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee to increase the integrity and credibility of the program.

1949

The quaint mountain resort officially opened with fifty rooms, one chairlift and two tow ropes in 1949.

1958

In 1958, during the construction of the first Olympic Village, the Olympic Committee asked Walt Disney—an avid skier—to become the Chairman of the Pageantry Committee for the games.

1961

On December 28, 1961, skiers ride to the top of Ward Peak at the newly-opened Alpine Meadows, on a lift called Chair One, a zone now accessed by the six-person Summit Express.

1965

By 1965, Alpine Meadows quadruples its terrain, adding six lifts and opening access to Scott Peak and the backside of Ward Peak, encompassing 2,400 skiable acres.

2010

In 2010 Squaw Valley celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Winter Olympic Games.

2011

After many years of separate ownership, the Palisades and Alpine sides of the mountain join forces in November 2011.

2021

In September of 2021 the ski resort formerly known as Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced a new name.

A new name will be announced in 2021.

2022

Palisades Tahoe will be installing a new Red Dog lift and completing the Base To Base Gondola this summer with construction beginning in May 2022 and ending in December 2022.
