**Job Summary:**
Under general supervision, this position performs standard laboratory tasks according to procedures. May perform phlebotomy and/or waived testing. May also perform various low complexity testing as well as a variety of general clerical duties to support the laboratory department, including receptionist and secretarial support, admission activities, and order entry processing.
**Job Responsibilities and Requirements:**
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Performs the loading and unloading of lab specimens from automated and non-automated instrumentation, as well as perform various waived testing.
+ Assists in problem requisitions/specimens.
+ May orient new hires.
+ Assists customers including answering phones and responding to customer inquiries.
+ Collects, labels, processes and preserves blood, urine and other specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
+ Enters, accesses and executes lab orders in the appropriate laboratory and electronic medical record system.
+ Cleans and maintains laboratory supplies and work area.
+ May update statistical records, labels tubes, and schedules processing runs.
+ May perform moderate complexity testing.
+ May perform phlebotomy and/or waived testing.
+ Identifies patients using two identifiers.
+ Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties including admission activities, insurance verification, order entry processing and medical record processing.
+ Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
+ High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.
EXPERIENCE
+ One year experience in a laboratory setting

What you will do
Obtain and properly identify blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary punctures in all age groups (newborns, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics) and patient types.
Access, select, release and print test orders from the electronic medical record system. Resolves unusual or duplicative orders as needed. Transcribes outside orders into the electronic medical record system as required.
Process specimens according to established procedures. Prepare specimens for transport per International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations to other laboratories as needed.
Perform and result waived point of care tests. Maintain quality waived test results by following department procedures.
Instruct patients in proper procedures for specimen collection when necessary. Answer patient questions regarding collection techniques and offers additional resources if patient requests them.
Follow the Phlebotomist Service Standards: (1) Use patient-centric communication; (2) Demonstrate empathetic responses to patients' concerns; (3) Acknowledge wait times and service delays; (4) Protect patient privacy; (5) Demonstrate teamwork with all members of the healthcare team; (6) Follow the organization's and laboratory's professional behavior guidelines/policies.
Assist with teaching, training, and mentoring phlebotomist interns and trainees.
Collect specimens for legal blood alcohol, drug screens, and paternity tests; testify in regional court systems to explain collection procedure if subpoenaed.
Maintain and monitor supply stock in the laboratory.
Respond appropriately to patient adverse reactions to venipuncture.
Travel to outside locations for phlebotomy collections when requested.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Phlebotomist is a meticulous professional who draws blood from patients generally for diagnostic purposes. S/he may test the blood specimens themselves or are responsible for labeling the specimen vials and transporting them to the lab for analysis. The Phlebotomist reports to the Laboratory Manager supports the hospital providing specific duties including:
JOB DUTIES:
* Identify patients and their personal information by reviewing their identity documents
* Assess patient needs, reviewing patient history and determining the reason(s) for the blood draw
* Select gauge needles and prepare veins or fingers for blood draw
* Extract blood from patients through venipuncture or fingersticks
* Analyze blood specimens using the correct testing equipment, when necessary
* Prepare specimens for transportation, including labeling vials accurately and matching blood specimens to patients
* Supply diagnostic notes to physicians or other healthcare professionals, as necessary
* Clean, maintain and calibrate lab equipment used in the drawing of blood specimens
* Order laboratory supplies, as needed
The Phlebotomist assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
* Proven experience as a Phlebotomist
* Understand of proper patient identification methods
* Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to drawing blood, handling specimen samples and use of relevant medical equipment
* Experience using effective puncture techniques
* Knowledge of testing protocols and use of testing equipment
* Superb dexterity and hand-eye coordination
* Keen attention to detail
* Strong verbal and written communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills

JOB SUMMARY:
Phlebotomist I performs daily phlebotomy activities of the Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-office Phlebotomy (IOP) accurately and on time. The person in this position interacts with the client, patients, and other PathGroup personnel in a professional and courteous manner and performs with confidence, both the forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Greets customers appropriately. Treat all customers in a courteous manner.
Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
Collects specimens according to established procedures. Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during and after the collection process.
Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
Completes requisitions accurately.
Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer. Requires attention to detail to maintain high level of accuracy. Communicate with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify test(s) ordered, obtain accurate billing information, i.e. diagnosis codes, UPIN information, etc.
Researches test/client information utilizing lab computer system.
Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Package specimens for transport. Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen. Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens.
Maintains required records and documentation.
Maintains daily records and all appropriate PSC/IOP Phlebotomy logs.
Assist with compilation of monthly statistics and data.
Performs basic clerical duties, i.e. filing, faxing, and preparing mail. The person in this position is required to perform electronic data entry.
Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period. Submits accurate expense and travel logs Monday for the week prior or as directed by management.

Performs a variety of administrative and clerical duties including admission activities, insurance verification, order entry processing and medical record processing.
Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

EDUCATION
High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.
EXPERIENCE
One year experience in a laboratory setting
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
Rare climbing.
